Hey, if you don't care what they're up to, good for you, that's one less thing you need to worry about.

And as for what I know, I don't know if it's just a higher functioning thing, but all Autistics and HFAs and Aspies should be proud of themselves and their ASDs, if or if not you're worried about the media representation is up to you. But, I don't know if it's just higher-functioning... ><

There are several LFAs (I really dislike that term though, as it pretty explicitly labels them as inferior, which I don't consider to be the case) who are involved in autistic advocacy.

Who Aut to be active?? topic

Autism speaks would have us think that only NTs can speak for us. This is why they are to be treated with caution. All persons of all abilities are to be included in being active in the AS movement. We all have something to contribute.

AutCom publishes a lot of opinions by autistic people who use AAC - see the website and newsletter at http://www.autcom.org/

They are not an autistic-run organisation, but I feel they support many things that most of us would approve of. I've told my local autism association to order their collection of presentations, called Sharing Our Wisdom, so I can get to read it (and so that others can do this too, of course).

richard, are you more asking if it's normal to not want this to form a huge part of your life and not want to get involved in all the debates? Because I totally understand that, I'm completely falling back into music at the moment and not feeling interested in autism at all. I think it's perfectly normal to find other things more interesting. *prepares to get flamed* a lot of things ARE more interesting...

I don't think it's to do with level of functioning though.

I find the whole concept of being proud of my aspergers bizarre. Not that I'm ashamed of it, just... neutral. It's just another fact about me, like I'm tall and have blue eyes. I'm not proud of those things. I'm proud of things I achieve and I'm not going to say that I owe all those things to AS, I owe them to getting off my arse and working.

Amanda's blog is Ballastexistenz. I'm not sure what or who anbuend is, though since it's in that mini-list, it's probably the same person. I like her writing.

I don't give a damn about autism activism; it ain't my narrow interest after all.

I don't care if all autistic individuals next year are aborted; it's not like it affects me in any way (I don't have empathy after all).

I was taught a lesson as a child, which went along the lines that if you're a real person and so is everyone else, then you have to do everything in your power to achieve the state in which you can be everything you desire for the others who are like you on the inside too. It's not much of a moral, since it's firstly directed at me and only because of this also directed at others.
Thus the problem with this is keeping it in mind when I have a spontaneous reaction. It's just, I still often forget that others are, you know, real people. But the above is what I try... and really... it's humane and good. Point is, it works.
