Michael Savage says that "autism is a fraud"

One of the first places I thought of when i saw the news was this community.

I've listened to Savage for a few years now. Sometimes I agree with him and sometimes I disagree. This is definitely one of those times.

Emailing him isn't really going to help. He has so many organizations after him that he never reads the email and often changes his email address. I'm sure the station email is read by somebody else, if at all. I've considered emailing him or writing him a few times myself, because every once in a while, he offends some aspect of myself. The only way to really reach him is by calling him on the phone, where he'll be free to hang up on you if he thinks you're illogical. It's going to take somebody with a lot of cajones. I'm sure a large percentage of his fans disagree with him, because just about everybody knows somebody that's autistic.

He has often exposed information that the news does not cover until months later and is really quite smart in some ways, but he is rather unhinged.

I have also been made aware that his brother was mentally ret*d and put in a home when they were kids. I suppose that has something to do with his attitude.

"Savage" is a pseudonym. His actual name is Weiner.

What a load of BS. My mom tried very hard for about 20 years to change my behavior, most of which was merely unusual rather than disruptive or harmful. But it just didn't work - I was different, and that's all there was to it. I'm not holding it against her, as I know she meant well, and she's come around in the last few years. I'm just stating this as proof that Savage is full of crap.

I can see the type of effect that his father belittling him had. Talking that way to your child will only make them bitter and angry, and Savage is living proof of that. Even beyond the autism issue, Savage's comments reek of the sexism and double standards surrounding gender roles in our society. If "acting like a girl" means not acting like a robot or a bully, and and actually showing some sensitivity and emotions, then yes, I plead guilty.

While I have little faith in online petitions.. There is apparently one going around on this.

Stern would only make a comment like this if it was clear that he was joking. Weiner (thanks for that factoid LKL) is always so full of anger and venom that nothing he says sounds like a joke (I never heard his radio show, but saw him interviewed on TV enough times to see what kind of an excuse for a human being he is). Even Limbaugh (who I used to like, until I found out the depths of his hypocrisy on the drugs issue, and now consider a major a-hole) is a class act compared to Weiner.

I did sign the petition to get him fired. I was disappointed to see that the organization running the petition is against drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, falsely claiming that it will hurt polar bears (before it was caribou, I wish they could make up their minds which animal it is that we have to sacrifice human energy needs to). I guess we have to take our allies where we can find them, though.

autism is not faked, it is a real disability that is getting worse with more children getting autism.

I wasn't up when his show aired, but he has two responses on his offocial site.

A note: I think that anyone who is constantly characterizing his fellow men as weak and wimpy is compensating for something, whether anatomical or psychological. Men who obsess over teaching others to be "tough" are what Saul Bellow called "reality instructors," tragic characters who have so debased themselves in learning how to play "the game of life" that they are enraged by the idea that someone out there might be playing a more subtle game than they. Reality instructors know deep down that they are amoral and largely disliked. That is why they hate people who don't want to play their game with them. Without that little narrow-minded Darwinian tough-guy game, they are nothing. They have little intellect, little compassion, few actual beliefs, and no understanding. All they have are their ill-gotten gains and their enormous mouths.

I'm really glad to see that people are getting involved in this and aren't just letting it go, like I thought was going to happen. I feel a lot better about all of this and I agree, he's just an idiot trying to get attention.

I read on a radio forum this morning that insurance giant AFLAC has terminated their sponsorship of the Michael "Sewage" programme as a result of his refusal to retract his remarks...
