A cop often has a split second in which to make a judgement call. Let's keep this realistic and see it for what it really is. A terrible unfortunate accident.

"Suspect is autistic, male"......

I think it is bizarre that we are saying in exactly the same situation "we" would have said or done X,Y or Z. I guarantee when startled you do not ever react with the hindsight of knowledge or compose your thoughts or instinctively relate to your environment or situation in constructive ways.
Doubt me? Think back to last time anyone startled you by tapping you on the shoulder unexpectedly. Did you jump? Good chance huh? What you did not do is NOT react. You did no remain rigid and un-moving and say "Oh who is that tapping me on the shoulder and for what purpose do you seek to gain my attention? May you please move in front of me that I may be better able to assess who you may be and your intent and motivations? That would be much appreciated"
Anyone suggesting differently is not really thinking this through that well.

Guns are for killing people so people and cops have no place carrying them in a civilised society!
