You were saying?

It doesn't count cause it was in response to a claim I never made, as I never said or claimed all aspies were well off.

Quote:
Besides, I'm not doing that at all, all I've really done here is ask you to back up what you're saying with facts, which you've repeatedly been unable to do.

I don't know what facts you're looking for.

Quote:
Why don't they deserve their skills? And what would all this anti-autistic research you support do about it? You can't just start redistribution of IQ points.

Because they don't work anywhere near as much for the success they get. I don't see what makes them entitled to it compared to other people. Why can't it do something like that? And why do you call the research "anti-autistic"? I bet you consider it against you and therefore anti-autistic, as you elites see yourselves as the sole embodiment of autism, without which autism wouldn't mean anything, and want their rights to control and keep down the others on the spectrum while regarding them as there for your benefit. This selfishess is intense. Those like you are fixated on the relentless pursuit of intelligence as your only goal, while the needs of others are neglected.

Quote:
Though, since you still maintain that only the "high-functioning" people are intelligent and successful, allow me to point out that the most intelligent man in the world, who has the highest IQ in the world, is in a wheelchair.

Who said he wasn't successful?

Quote:
The majority opinion among autistic people is that there should not be a cure, so you've shot yourself in the foot there.

Yea right. Prove it.

Quote:
That's because only a few people have the ability to do so

At least you admit that.

Quote:
Again, if you cured autism, you wouldn't be able to redistribute talent, and you're more likely to simply reduce it. And again, you are living in a fairy tale land, like Robin Hood but with IQ points. It's ludicrous.
I don't believe you. I think they should discern what is lacking within a brain that comes with lower aptitude, and augment it to increase aptitude, while knowing what about brain structure increases aptitude in those who have it. Oh, I'm ludicrous. Well, let's put this in perspective. You're one of the ones claiming developmental disorders are beneficial and should be kept.

Quote:
It does according to pro-cure organsations.

Don't regard everything so seriously.

Quote:
No, I've quoted statistics and I'm talking sense. You're living in a fantasy land where you can swap people's brains around. You seem to think that an autism cure would create a utopia in which everyone has the same level of skill. This is simply absolute non-sense.

All of this is irrelevant, however, as there will never be a cure. There may be a pre-natal test, sadly, but there will never be a cure.

One irrelevant statistic that doesn't make your position seem better, doesn't help legitimize you. I don't think it's a fantasy with today's possibilities and knowledge, which only are increasing. Research relating to it won't just disappear anyway. You can't prove there won't ever be one. I don't buy this reinforced pessimism that compels others into submission.

This bores me now. I'll do one final post and that's it.

Most of us do not want a cure:
http://www.wrongplanet.net/postt50892.html
http://www.wrongplanet.net/postt137689.html
http://www.wrongplanet.net/postt54840.html

I remember seeing bigger polls and threads on here than that, too, but Google is hiding them from me :P

The statistic I quoted was relevant. You talked like all Aspies are elite and simply get success without doing any work, and I'm telling you that's bulls**t and showing you statics to prove it.

You, on the other hand, have shown me no evidence of your claims. Have you got any stats or studies showing that all Aspies are elite and successful? Or that most people want a cure? Or that you can make people smarter? All of these are claims you've made which simply have no sense to them, and therefore, no factual backing. In fact, they don't even have any ground in reality.

So, since it looks like you have no evidence for your claims, I see no reason to continue this argument unless you can show me some, else we're just wasting our own and each other's time.

Those polls don't show consensus against cure. They aren't scientific. And they were voted on by individuals here, who in larger proportion are higher functioning. That's not completely representative of the spectrum.

It was not relevant as you were just putting words in my mouth.

I've not been making many detail based claims. I've been talking of the broad aspects involved and how I see it. Screaming "evidence" at me doesn't make you seem better. I won't explain reasons to you any further, while you make rigid portrayals of the things I say to make my ideas seem doubtful. I didn't claim to incontrovertibly know all. You barely addressed my points, and I don't expect to shake your viewpoint, as yours is molded by your own circumstances, so I'm done dialoguing with you.

I don't understand hating them. I think they're wrong about a long of things, and I think the focus should be trying to provide services rather then try to find a cure that may or may not be achievable. But they do give a sizable amount of money to services, they do provide a lot of information, and they do give some parents hope. I don't think they're the best Autism organization, and I think my money can be better spent elsewhere. I know all the problems about Autism Speaks, , and I feel pretty passionate about them too. But I think they do more good then bad.

Anyway, they are the biggest Autism organization, so I think we need to work with them. They may not have listened much yet, but that doesn't mean they won't ever listen. If we keep on ranting about how terrible the organization is, nothing will get done. But we may have a chance to do something impactful if we understand there side, and provide advice of how they can make lives for people with Autism and Aspergers better other then a cure. If we approach it that way, they will listen.

No, no they don't. They spent about $800,000 on family services in a year where they made over $60 million.

Is that all they give to services (I'm not sure what falls under family services). If so, then I agree they are completely mispending their money. But I still feel the same way about how to reach them.

I'm not really an expert on finances, but if you/anyone else is there is a copy of the 2006 report of what Autism Speaks funds went on: http://www.aspiesforfreedom.com/autisms ... 0_2006.pdf

Personally I would be interested if someone with a bit more knowledge/patience/whatever was able to summarise it into "this much on services, this much on research, this much on <x>", etc. Or if anyone has a more up to date copy of the same information, would be interesting to compare the two.

I've looked through their finances, and yes, that is it.

Here's a video breaking it all down (skip to 0:40):

IMO, Autism Speaks is trying to get rid of us, and the thing that makes me laugh is that they think there's a "cure"

No such thing

As a general rule/warning, if anyone tries to "cure me of my disease" I will dislocate both of their shoulders. (That hurts BTW)

I Have AS, and I can speak for myself

P.S. I hate how people consider AS/Autism to be a disease. We're not sick, we're different, heck, we're BETTER
EDIT: By that I meant that we're better in some ways.

You are so right dude! Another person who knows that when it comes to curing ASDs, violence is the response that works best!

I don't think I have an opinion about Autism Speaks as it stands.. I've observed some of the dispute about it and if you would like for me to study an argument and I will tell you what I think and make a post reply. Give me some precise concerns of Autism Speaks and I will study them and give you unbiased possible theories and my concluding personal opinion. You will not be socially attacked.

Well, someone has to make one first.

There's nothing to cure you of. What do you think will happen to those who try to prevent a cure for those who need one, due to the response of those who need one, after a cure is devised?

Quote:

What about those on the spectrum who can't speak for themselves as much as you can?

Hi!
I'm back!
I wonder how Autism Speaks actually gets the kids to test on...

You ass!
I don't think there should be a cure!
What about people who decide to FORCE the cure on us?
What then?

Why won't you think of anyone besides yourself? I think there should be a cure. So do others. How am I supposed to live without one? Who is this "us"? You're not acting in my interests.
