And this happening in the same country that put two ten year olds in front of an adult's penal court in '93?
Let me put it like this: I do have overall believe in justice, and that taking it into your own hands is wrong. That said, if something like that ever happened to a child of mine and the police decided not to press charges, I would make sure that justice will be done myself. It is one thing to assume that children of a certain age don't know right from wrong or are doli incapax, but these youngster knew what they were doing.

Nine against one? I read the story, and what they did was a serious offense. They should definately get some time, or supervised probation at the very least.

What baffles me is that it was dismissed as simple battery, whereas in my oppinion it should have been charged as aggravated assault. Seeing the picture, you can't tell me that they did not have the intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

That is absolutely sickening, and I find it really upsetting.

It says that it was dealt with as common assault. No way was that common assault.

I'm not very surprised though, it's virtually identical to my own experiences of the Criminal Justice System here in the UK.

This is what the system did? They let a gang of 9 people go scotch free? They should have been punished!

My suggestion (in this exact order):
birching (for the girls) and castration (for the boys)
flogging
a round of Pankration with hardened criminals
and to top it all off a punch to the face

If that happened in the USA, those kids be facing charges. UK is too soft on juveniles.

Are you sure?? Really?? It serves to reinforce one of the dominant messages of my upbringing: "You can't blame kids for beating up the freak."

I don't like it. But, as things apparently still stand, it's the way things are.

I hope you don't really mean this, but I can't always tell. Violence towards anyone only reaffirms violence as a solution. This is the kind of thing with which NTs ran me away from different jobs I've had. They get behind my head and talk and talk about abusing their children, how they were abused as children, and how funny it all is. I reach a point at which I can't stay there anymore, so I quit. What happened is very, very terrible and must be addressed, but children who were not subjected to violence in their upbringing would not usually commit such an act. Of course, the crowd psychology, basic sheepdom thing was probably going on as well.

Yeah, I think most people don't tend to identify with the "underdog."

Do something in a group and you're awwright.

Do something by yourself and you're a victim.

Hmm.

I'll just say that often people in the US literally get away with murder, depending on who their target is.
