I came across a website for Generation Rescue today, and they do not make any sense. They flaunt messages like, "Autism is reversable," and other things of that sort, and plan to "cure" autism with biochemical or biomedical treatments...what do you think of that?

Ugh, isn't that the group Jenny McCarthy is affiliated with?

We need to tell parents of autistic kids that you can't cure autism. The important thing is to improve autistic people's quality of life.

That's stupid. Generation Rescue will not lay their filthy hands on me, or the future generations of autistics. I will not allow for that to happen. What era are they living in? 1930s and 40s Germany?

Okay, Godwin's law was invoked. Everybody can go home now.

I'm going to protect myself from that place in case they do try to get their hands on me. I could stay in my house...sorry for my stupid comment...I was being hilarious.

Actually, in this case, the comparison is utterly appropriate. The goal of Nazi Germany was to eliminate individuals they defined as imperfect. In fact, that goal sprang from the eugenics movement. The eugenics movement still exists - and they want to get rid of everyone on the autism spectrum, either by curing us, or by letting us die out once a genetic test is available so mothers can abort if their fetus tests positive for autistic genes. In effect, we are discussing Nazis who have simply decided to escape their bad press by being slightly more subtle in their efforts.

If they were using the tactics of Nazi Germany, they would round up autistic people and kill them. If they were using eugenics, they would sterilize autistic people and their parents.

Prenatal testing and curing autism is not the same as eugenics. Even if they do have a cure or prenatal test for autism, there will still be autistic people.

Hardly any will survive. What's that statistic showing how many Down Syndrome babies are still allowed to be born? 5%?

Prenatal testing is not always precise.

Also, a woman deciding that she doesn't want her potential child to be autistic isn't any of your concern. It's her body, her choice. Not everybody is able to care for a special-needs child.

Read War Against the Weak, by Edwin Black, and you'll see that the eugenicists made a deliberate choice, once the Nazis ruined their chances for acting more directly, to shift strategies and find other ways to eliminate "inferior" individuals. The very fact he felt compelled to repeatedly disclaim any criticism of Planned Parenthood - despite the fact several high ranking members of that organisation were prominently involved in eugenics societies - shows just how successful their propaganda has been in obscuring their real motives.

Although I would never personally encourage such a decision, I can certainly feel sympathy for an individual woman who may feel overwhelmed.

But that does not mean I have any use for the eugenicists who do everything they can to influence such choices, such as the medical doctors specifically recommending abortions. It is no accident that, before eugenics went underground, many of its greatest supporters were doctors.

An individual choice - whatever my personal opinion of it - is one thing. An organised effort to secure a certain result is another.

I disagree. It's not about her body at all, it's about a potential life. Killing it off because of autism is utterly horrible and, if it's because she thinks "her body her choice", then extremely selfish too.

Like I said, not everybody is mentally, emotionally, or financially equipped to raise a child with special needs. I'm sorry, but it's none of your business what someone else wants to do with their body.

And abortion isn't murder.

Like I told you, whether or not a life is allowed to be created is a separate issue from what someone wants to do with their body. If they don't want the kid, they should send it to a care home to be adopted. But reducing the number of autistic people for such selfish reasons is pathetic.

You do realize that special needs children are rarely adopted, right?
