I AM CONDUCTING AN INTERVIEW WITH AUTISM SPEAKS
I am a 24 year old Aspie and writer. I have been granted an interview with Dana Marnane, Vice President, Awareness and Events, Autism Speaks.
The questions will be challenging but I believe they might establish a beneficial dialogue.
The results should be published on the homepage of...

And here are the interview questions...
How does Autism Speaks account for the large community of self-advocating autistics who oppose their organization? Does Autism Speaks feel this population has misunderstood their message, and if so, what might be said to clarify their intentions?
Autism Speaks funds the Autism Genome project, described, on autismspeaks.org, as, “the largest study ever conducted to find the genes associated with inherited risk for autism.” What specific benefits might this research provide the autistic community? Why might so many autistics oppose such research?
In 2007, Autism Speaks merged with Cure Autism Now. Does finding an autism cure continue to be one of your organizations primary objectives? Do you believe it is legitimately possible to “cure” autism, and if so, what exactly would such a cure entail? What characteristics would be removed from a cured individual and what characteristics would remain?
A growing body of scientific research suggests that we are rapidly nearing the development of an amniocentesis test to detect autism, much like the procedure currently used to detect Down’s Syndrome. Does funding provided by Autism Speaks in any way enable the development of such a test? If a prenatal test for autism was developed, does Autism Speaks believe that it should be made available to the public?
It has been proposed that Autism, Asperger’s Disorder and Pervasive Developmental Disorder – Not Otherwise Specified, be replaced in the DSM-V by a general category referred to as Autism Spectrum Disorder. How might this be beneficial, and or detrimental, to the autistic community, their families, schools, the clinical practices attempting to improve their quality of life, etc…?
Hans Asperger said, “It seems that for success in science and art, a dash of autism is essential.” Does Autism Speaks believe that certain valuable human characteristics might be lost if autism was to be eradicated from the species?
How does Autism Speaks feel about speculation that certain important figures in human history, such as Einstein and Mozart, had High Functioning Autism, or Asperger Syndrome? Does Autism Speaks believe that individuals with HFA or AS have greater societal value than those with lower functioning forms of autism?
Would someone on the autism spectrum be capable of attaining a well-paid and influential position within Autism Speaks?
Many of Autism Speaks’ promotional strategies have been heavily criticized. Are there any specific marketing choices that Autism Speaks has come to regret? If so, what would Autism Speaks say to those who were offended by the way they have chosen to depict autism, and what corrective action is being taken?
What primary goal does Autism Speaks wish to reach within the next decade?

These are all great questions. Understanding is impossible without communication, and it appears you are attempting to provide that to others, through a very thoughtful dialogue. Good luck, and I am sure we all look forward to seeing Autism Speaks responses to the questions that you are presenting.
i comend you on your your undertaking.i will look forward to reading it if its published.as far as mozart having autism.i would definatly say beethoven and bartok had AS or a non verbal learning disability.but i dont see mozart having any ASD.

I went to the website, and saw your effort there to stay neutral, in your presentation. I was thinking there might have been a little dissent at AFF, over the neutral, non-aggressive presentation of the questions, but it is well worth the effort to get questions answered that many reasonable individuals are concerned about, I think.
It is a much better approach I think than protesting an autism speaks walk, in protest that the organization supports Eugenics; you are finding out the actual position on those concerns, and reporting it back to the rest of your support site.
I see what you are doing here, yourself as a representative of one of the major websites that focuses on support for people with Aspergers, as groundbreaking, since I have been paying attention to the type of communication here that has been attempted with the autism speaks organization. You are the first person I have seen to take this iniative.
Again, good luck to you.
Great writing!
I think you are what is needed, a "Fresh Today" view of a world we have been bogged down in developing better hair splitting machines.
You think I am strange? Let me describe some normal people! You did a better job at the outsider view of life, than self description, but that is who we are.
Most people do define themselves in terms of others they have met, or in your case what others have painted, with few fixed points in life, because if viewed from the other side, fixed points seen different.
A life not taken for granted, a fine example of Markram's Intense World Syndrom in action, perceptions that over come the randomly constructed mental defenses of others, conveyed in words that bring out the humor of a broad natured view of horror, and the blank spaces between.
Markram has been as close to right as I have heard. Perception beyond the ordinary, a bit much to cope with, worse for other people, but still a human skill taken to a logical conclusion, which in another field, like music, painting, the most perceptive are highly regarded.
We are just in the wrong business, and writing is as close as we come to reaching into other's brains, rearranging the parts, without being considered offensive. We can offend in print, but it is a field where the ordinary has little market value. In all cases the role of the writer is to show the reader a broader view of life.
You are timely, chosing to be born 24 years ago, coming into our post gridlock culture where lines have been drawn in the sand during a windstorm, and people are trying to stick to a one point view of, are they in favor or do they oppose, yes and no?
So far the questions have not been produced, but we have answers waiting.
With a special interest in genetics, neanderthal, denisovan and sapien, I favor all research, and do not see knowledge as evil. People are, and even more so with less knowledge.
Autism Speaks is Corporate, a newly evolved mental construct with some high functioning traits. They bridge very different worlds, and there is humor in putting Marketing in charge of promoting Academic Research. So of course Marketing turns to the pros, Advertising, Media, with the goal of reaching their market, parents of the autistic and people seeking a tax deductable donation.
The product produced comes in the form of genetic research, that Marketing does not have a clue about how that works. Academic Research is just as in the dark about meaning, what could be discovered, potential applications, and has constructed defenses to keep the real world out of their labs. They speak and write in a private language.
The Academics are sure Research should continue, it is what they do, so they try to keep funding coming in, and producing funding is what Autism Speaks does, through Marketing, and Media.
In my view a half billion in research has shown there will not be a genetic answer. Over a hundred sites have been identified as maybe having something to do with autism, and further research will show a third of the genome has fuzzy edges and keeps recombining in various ways.
The main problem confronting research is controls, the non autistic have the same DNA, and many of them work in research.
It was worth a half billion to show fuzzy edges as something that might have to do with people acting like people. I always wondered.
Should Academic Research continue? Yes, it keeps them off the streets.
Should Autism Speaks fund research? Yes, it keeps them off the streets.
Should people donate? Yes, It makes them feel they are at least trying.
Will there be a Cure? Not till a big space rock smashes the planet to bits.
Why is Autism such a mystery? Marketing does not have a clue.
What does it all mean? See Arthur Clarke's, Childhood's End, for the meaning of the dance of the hairless ground ape.
What is the Problem? Everyone is doing their best.
What is the answer? Keep writing, if I were to fault anyone it would be the autistic for keeping secrets. Our difference of thought and perception can only be explained from within. Here on Wrong Planet we seem more alike than the world in general. We are a type, sharing many things in common.
What can we do? Understand we are the more functional end of something that has an other end that costs billions, that many are working in good faith to understand, and they will only see us as humans if we act like humans. Do not let others define you.
I see that research has run out of options, treatment is all that is left, cattle prods are being banned, progress is slow, but burning at the stake has ended. I agree more could be done for support, but I have not seen any suggestions of exactly what.
Self Advocates demand money, and yell Genocide, but have yet to put forth a single proposal I could support. Complain is not a program, and it reflects badly on us all.
That some of us are supposed to be intelligent is not supported by our behavior. We have the only insider view, and have failed to produce a single idea of what would make our lives better.
Our lack of support for others doing their best is short sighted, Research and Marketing are not neurotypical, they are just other versions mental diversity. To them, we are bullies who attack them for no reason.
We are in this together, and fairness and diplomatic behavior are the only path forward.
You could ask if the organization plans to ever formally apologize for the most egregious representations which have hurt and offended many autistic people. ("Autism Everyday," "I Am Autism.")
Also, ask if the organization ever plans to increase the amount of money they spend on services and service-related research.
This may be a tad confrontational, but I think it might be worth asking: Do you consider yourselves to be a disability organization? Is forging connections with other (non-autism) disability organizations something which is important to you?
Thanks so much guys! I am very passionate about writing AND autistic self-advocacy and am currently seeking employment opportunities that will allow me to channel these passions.
Despite not being formally employed, I'm working as hard as I can as often as I can and I'm incredibly happy to do so.
Your compliments give me hope that I might create positive change in the future.
Please feel free to join aspiesforfreedom.com and comment on my articles if you do so. I by no means represent the opinions of all members, and some have been very hostile to my approach, but I am working very hard to make a difference.
I could use all the support I can get!

Is it an ambush interview?
Does she have any realistic idea what is coming? (and I mean really. She probably underestimates you since you're younger)
I kind of see this as leading to hard feelings, including on your side, since she's probably going to give bs answers.
Is there a way you could give her a heads-up and maybe limit it to the top three questions, and with the attitude, okay, I asked you a question, you gave me an answer.

I really think we need to generally ignore these formalistic bs 'corporate' groups and do our own thing.
And I think the next political step is to make the cases that plenty of people are medium functioning.

Way to play hardball instead of pansy-footing it, OP.
I, too, am curious to hear some answers from an organization I consider abominable.

I have been completely honest with her. The questions were submitted already and she said that she should have her response to me by tomorrow, although I would completely understand if she required more time.
She was incredibly friendly and polite and thanked me for approaching her.
