Would you hide your autism diagnosis even if that means a violation of the law, to advance your career?

How is that some people could beat the system while others always play by the rules and got screwed?

What law is violated by hiding an autism diagnosis?

Nobody has to disclose an autism diagnosis to an employer in the United States.

They could disclose having a disability....and possibly obtain accommodations.

Most people do not disclose, though, for practical reasons.

If there happened to be a law that required disclosure, I would be open about it.

I met a sort of coworker the other day who is quite open about having Asperger’s. I let him know that I’m on the Spectrum, too, but I probably won’t tell anybody else unless a similar scenario presents itself.

No, I'm a very strict rule-follower (within reason) and am very open about my diagnosis if anyone asks. I can't convincingly fake being NT no matter how hard I try, if I didn't disclose and someone who actually has a clue about what autism really is was paying any attention, I'd get caught pretty darn quickly.

There is no law saying you have to disclose any type of disability, the job application may ask if you have a disability that will affect your ability to do your job.But if you don't feel your disability will affect your job,you can just say no.

I might if I thought the law was stupid enough

I wouldn't want to live in a place where not disclosing was against the law 8O

It's pretty hard to avoid Godwin's law here...

Isn't the point here to ask what one would do in such a situation, not if such a situation is currently realistic?

Anyway, in my case it would depend on the circumstances. If telling about my autism would just cause trouble to my career then yes, I'd follow the law, but if telling about it would likely put me in danger (like the government rounding up all the people who don't meet certain standards or something) then no, I would not follow the law.

OMG that cat is TOO adorable!! !! I am a huge animal lover. I used to have a kitty with a little Hitler mustache like that too (not that I think racism is okay). I miss her, she passed away years ago.

To address the question, yes I would violate any law that could allow any kind of discrimination against me on the basis of my disability. For example, where I live, when you renew your driver's license, autism is one of the conditions you are "required" to report to the Motor Vehicle Administration. I would never report this to them. I am afraid they would take my license or force me to retake the driving test, which took me 4 tries to pass when I was younger because my poor spatial perception makes it nearly impossible for me to parallel park. I know I would fail it now. That being said, I have never been in an accident in 20 years of driving where I have been at fault (knock on wood). As I see it, that's just discrimination. They don't need to know that.
I've never cared much for rules. As long as I'm not hurting others, and there is a low chance of being caught, I tend to disregard them completely. I don't steal though. I have been treated so unfairly because of my conditions that I feel I need to do whatever it takes. Autism makes it difficult for many of us to get ahead in life even if other people don't know about it. There are supposed to be laws to prevent discrimination, but the big shots find ways around them. Since the "law" screws people with disabilities, I will gladly screw the "laws".

I wouldn't give that information, for the same reason I refuse to have a "voluntary" HIV test or do a "23 and me" genetic test. I don't support gathering information for the purpose of discrimination, which is exactly what this is - whatever the outcome of the test might be, positive or negative.

I can't help thinking that if there were indeed a law that would require you to disclose your diagnosis, it would probably be better to hide it.
