I like her attitude about her place in the spectrum. I think the diagnosis will be very helpful for her.

I like the way she described and explained her experience.
Yay, Holly!

She's 44. I highly, highly doubt she's "autistic".

Many members on here were diagnosed when they were older than that. I believe her.

The stuff about not quite understanding what she was getting wrong in social interactions does seem on point. I always wondered why I was like that to, till I learned about my autism. And if it wasn't for the therapist who suspected I had autism...I probably still would not know I have it.

What does being 44 have to do with it?

I think he was trying to say that it seems unlikely that someone would have gotten to that age without being diagnosed already.

But that is obviously not true since many people are diagnosed at an older age.

Especially true for females from my understanding.

This post is a flashback to the WP of 10 years ago and not in a good way.

I guess this needs to be explained again. When she was young the criteria for diagnosis was stricter so a lot of traits or traits that are “mild” did not result in a Autism diagnoses or a misdiagnosis. Also it was and still is to a degree more difficult for women to get diagnosed because the original diagnostic criteria was based on boys. The stereotypes linger longer then the diagnostic criteria. This means autistic people may not realize they are autistic they have bought into the stereotypes. Also because Autism tends to run in families Autistic people may think their traits are normal.

There is understandable doubt about celebrities claims of autism. They are known to make stuff up for publicity. We have no way of knowing for sure if a celebrity is autistic. Being a support site it is my policy to not question autism claims unless there is a very obvious reason to do so. Age is not at all a reason to doubt a claim of Autism

I was diagnosed at age 55. Others on this board got diagnosed in their 60s and later. Saying we can’t be autistic because of our age is offensive.

I was diagnosed at age 57 and agree. I find someone being questioned beacuse of a late diagnosis as deeply offensive. In my case it's not like I have lived an easy life until I suddenly after half a century on some kind impulse decided to get myself a diagnosis.

Yes, bizarre to see a post doubtful because of someone's older age.

From everything I've been reading it is very common for women to get diagnosed later in age. There are a variety of reasons, from us masking our symptoms more to our symptoms presenting differently from males. Much like so many other medical and mental conditions, science started analyzing autism from the perspective of boys and thus using that criteria on girls and women can prove ineffective.

I'm 35 and only just recently have come to the realization that I very possibly might be autistic.

I believe her. A lot of WP members have received a diagnosis at an older age. I've also read that people on the spectrum can be very attractive. That's another reason I believe her.
