As in Burger?

You don't exactly say "ooh, lets have a cheeseburja" do you?

Burger, and Asperger are both German words.

The G makes a GER sound not a JER sound.

I rest my case.

Alternatively, the -GERS is -JERS when Anglicized.

After all, we say JER-many rather than GER-many.

I think we can say it however we want. Heather from America's Next Top Model said "Oz-burger". Who cares?

For years I said the word epitome as "ep- Ih- Tome," not "ip-it-i-mee."

I liked it better that way.

ger as in as in burger

I think it is sort of like:
ahs-pair-ger

with a hard G.

So, take heart, it isnt actually Ass Burgers!

Yes, I believe that's the correct German pronunciation. I like it, personally, but use the semi-standard "ass-burger" pronunciation usually.

Please repost your rant but with your preferred pronunciation transcribed in the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA).

Except they pronounce it "Deutschland" or "ˈdɔɪtʃlant" for NeantHumain's sake.

Thanks, Fuzzy. I was also reading about the country of China. It is Westerners that call that land by the name Of China. The inhabitants have entirely different names for it, and for themselves.

This raises a thought in my mind; Does Hans Asperger have any living descendants? With out without the last name "aspergers"?

I do know its said like Ass-burger but its been habit to say Assperjer. Most of us learn the word online and dont really hear it spoken for a while so will think of examples where "erge" fir into and the best example would be "merge" or "merger" also if you take "burger" then take away 2 letters it sounds like "urge" which brings the g back to sounding like j again.

Anyway I think that I like people to say whatever way it suits them best. Language is supposed to evolve and I would prefer it to be left to evolve into whatever form we all know and like. I dont really like the name anyway so saying it correctly doesnt interest me at all.

I heard a recording of a relative of Asperger, I think granddaughter? She had inherited the surname..
I remember how she said it. I trust her version over anything else I hear as she is from Germany and speaks the language.

She sure didnt say Ass-Burgers, anyway. That is one thing.

BTW: Is it As-per-ger or A-sper-ger? I normally prefer the latter version.
