I've already posted this in the General section but thought I'd post something here in case some of you don't go there.

I'm trying to get Oprah to do a positive show on autism after some of the incredibly negative ones she has done recently - basically showing us to be a bunch of hopeless ret*ds destroying our families. I'm pushing hard to get her to change that, and discovered The Autism Acceptance Project which seems to really fit with what we're all saying here http://www.taaproject.com/

I've started a thread/petition on Oprah's site at http://www.oprah.com/community/thread/63428?tstart=0 if anyone wants to go over there and put some support behind this. Her show influences millions and could do a lot to stop the discrimination against us - discrimination that her show has contributed to!! !!

I watch her show a lot, sometimes with certain issues the show does get a little over dramatic. The autism ones were pretty negative, saying that autism is an epidemic that is destroying lives. I'm really pushing for her to turn around and do a show that lets the actual autistics speak, NOT just stupid bitter parents looking for something to blame (vaccinations mostly) So if you have a moment to sign up on her forum and join the petition, please do.

...and pay the taxes...

That's seriously what happened when that free car giveaway happened on oprah... several of the recipients had to pay more taxes than they could on account of this "gift"...

But that is the fault of the government, not Oprah.

Well, I don't watch Oprah, (don't watch TV period). But I went to the site, and posted my 2 cents.

I don't watch Oprah either, she's nothing but a cult leader.

Someone went on there and compared Autism to a broken arm, then went on a whole rant about how the "Jenny Mcarthy diet" needs to be strictly followed, etc. I posted a reply under the name "robwithas", covering that post as well as the "cure by abortion". I made it a slightly more negative post than the other ones to try and further drive home the point.

normally_impaired: Oh that was you? I loved your post, it was brilliant. That dude was a moron, he even admitted he knew nothing about autism. Broken arm??? He seemed to just want to advertise the diet, he's probably a dietician looking for business.

It doesn't matter whether you like Oprah or not, the woman has one of the most influencial shows in the world. As alex said, her show is watched by over 49 million people. Her influence is AMAZING. The day after the Jenny McCarthy show aired, people flocked to bookstores for her book. I actually heard someone asking for it the next day. Any book that goes on Oprah will be on the best sellers list. Love her or hate her, she has a lot of power. If people like Alex, Temple Grandin and ordinary Aspies like ourselves could get our say on Oprah, we could do so much to show MILLIONS who we are, what we are about - and change the face of autism from ret*d, hopeless children to gifted, proud adults.

It CAN be done, there was a woman on oprah.com who had such a hateful attitude to autism, she was condemning us, calling us arrogant and demanding that we be cured. After discussing it with her over a few weeks, she has changed her tune and is now open, asking questions and much more accepting toward us. That's one person, what if we can change more minds? But minds will never change if their only view of autism is the negative one Oprah and Jenny McCarthy are currently spreading.
