Nobody wanting to live in new Hampshire or Queensland? The south east of queensland is the fastest growing region in Australia.
Yeah, I was wrong that I said that.
What I mean is that some people will choose not to live there if they feel under threat from the people in their community. If a certain politician or political party is extremely popular in an area (rather than simply getting in on the apathetic vote) then that will tell you quite a bit about the area's people.

Yeah that makes Queensland a contradiction in terms. had state premier (equivalent to American governors) called joh bjelke petersen who among other things ran a police state, famous for disrupting unions and left wing parties with force. He also advocated forced sterilization of aboriginal people. Despite his being further to the right than hitler joh was remarkably popular and lasted some 30 years as premier. During his tenure queens land also became the most popular tourist destination in Australia and the most attractive internal destination for Australians wanting to leave Melbourne and sydney. Today we have a member of parliament in northern queens land called bob Katter who carries on that famous queens land redneck tradition.
The only other example I can think of is the state of california electing governor Arnold Schwartzaneggar.
