Having Autism Doesn't Make Me Superhuman
Basically "acceptance" means different things to different people. To me it means many of the laws protecting disabled people (i know not perfect) + non discrimination & same opportunities and treatment. To others it means no longer regarding something as a concern or problem to be treated or cured, which i believe is a mistake with any disability.
But without going over the pros v neg of ND again. Im curious as to what specific acceptance / accomodations many autistic advocates would like to see outside of NT kindness and job opportunities?
Where the rubber meets the road what specific tangable things do advocates want, in the history of WP did anyone make a list?
I suggest you start a thread on that topic, as ASaPartOfMes topic is about not being superhuman.
The needs analysis of one autistic person is different to every other autistic persons needs analysis.
There couldn't be a list of accomodations for every single variation in the expression of the diagnostic criteria. This is the issue, there aren't short cuts to understanding the very individual needs of each person.
Ok here is one tangiable thing to start you off, a client led/partnership approach to an individualised needs analysis, as the starting point to establish relevent accomodations.

Hmm; i surely am not Superhuman. But yes; Supernormal i am and i can and will easily prove that with irrefutable evidence as i carry the Proof wherever i go in not more than a 6-inch Screen; and the Evidence therein.
If, i did not manage to escape the Matrix of Culture (otherwise known as Financial Independence; rich enough not to have to work like 'Bruce Wayne'; His Super Power and His Tool Kit that He built for success) no doubt i would be no more than
an Online Dweller, never assessed as a Dance Legend in Real Life; the flesh and blood stuff with 12,053 Miles of Public

True; i Leg Press 1520 Pounds at 8 Reps Max; but will only Prove i Leg press 1340 Pounds on YouTube; 12 Reps,

That Pain is named the Suicide Disease; like someone drilling Your Teeth without Novocaine that no other drug

the first word i wrote here was Thanks Giving of 2010; Fully 33 Months into that Pain Disorder as a shut-in in

almost at 7.4 Million Words now; I continue to write on average around 100 Thousand Words a Month.
i continue to Public Dance on Average 166 Miles a Month; And i have Danced with College Age folks
for the 282nd Dance Week Night this Thursday; over 2000 Selfies Recorded Smiling ear to ear with
the Most Beautiful Young Women in this Beautiful Pensacola Beach Town too.
Life is Good;
But i earned it though every ounce of Blood, Sweat, and Tears;
My only realistic Suggestion is do whatever it takes to find Mind and Body Balance
to escape Stress the best you can and will. Stress not only Kills; it does something potentially much worse;
it takes Your Soul away and sends you Straight to Hell Within on Earth if You Endure it too long without saying NO.
i didn't know how to say no; i was always outcast; i couldn't afford to say no; as i didn't get 9 Lives like a Cat at work
for being anyone's good Old Boy or Best Dog Friend Forever Work Mate. i paid for that forever; yes, dearly; dearly with
beyond fires of Hell within; forever now then.
And if You think this response is Long; You've Never Danced with the Real Devil within. You've never seen through
the eyes of a Joker who refused to act on Vigilance no matter how deep the Pain and Numb just to exist for another
second eternally in Hell; as you look in the Mirror and cannot recognize if you ever lived at all; no smile; no memory
of a smile or laugh at all; all you can do; is Paint on a smile; with no feeling at all at best; if and when you can find
a breath of Strength to even do that as some approximation of Human Life.
Never Give up; and if you can/will help it never go to that place at all; The Remedy is simple as two hands become
one and two feet become one in Balance Moving with Gravity too. And true i will leave you with an example
of what i do; You don't have to do it like me; as i have no idea what i am doing to teach you any lesson at all.
Let Your Body decide and then Your mind may be happier than ever before for the Balance Your body Brings the rest of
you in Peace and Harmony eternally now; Science Proves it works; it's worth a shot for whatever style of Meditation
takes you out of Purgatory Grey to the BLack Abyss of Eternal Hell now.
Other than that whatever you do; Learn TO SAY NO; DANCE WITH THE DEVIL AND SURVIVE.
Enjoy Heaven now; why not; Chances are you don't go to Church; Chances are you may not be Nearly
as Lost as 'them' as 'us' for real; for escaping that Matrix of Minion is surely a First step toward 'Neo' Life for Real.

Indeed we are not superhuman. However:
1) There ARE certain talents that are apparently more common among autistic people than among allistic people. Some of these talents are, in my opinion, an intrinsic corollary of certain common autistic traits. (For example, a lot of autistic kids like to line up their toys. This means the kid likes to organize and classify things, which is a necessary first step in any scientific endeavor.)
2) In order for talents of any kind to manifest, a child (usually) needs to be brought up in a way that allows and encourages them.
3) As far as I can tell, most autistic children are not brought up in such a way that whatever latent talents they might have (be they the stereotypical autistic talents of math and music, or something else) are identified and encouraged. Instead, the focus is on trying to fix everything that's wrong with these kids, often turning them into emotional wrecks in the process.
And that, to me, is a great tragedy.
As Dr. Stephen Shore has said, you can't build a career on remediated weaknesses.
I speak as one of the lucky ones. I was a musical savant (though not a full-blown prodigy) as a child, and I later developed a talent for math. In both cases, my upbringing and my childhood surroundings played a key role in the development of these talents.

This is true generally not just for autistics. Most of us were brought up by what is now called free range parenting. In that era we were expect to do and figure out a LOT more things ourselves. Parents and the schools in some respects if not necessarily encouraging our talents did not stand in our way as much. This was far from perfect, kids who were flailing, who were bullied did not receive help, failed and were viewed a losers. Now instead in bullying in the form of name calling and fists from other kids they get it in the form of good intentioned adults directing every aspect of their lives. Yet people wonder why the rates of depression, suicide, anxiety, and other mental illnesses are skyrocketing among American youth.
All that said I agree with you that being autistic in an NT world/autistic traits world significantly exacerbates these issues.
I am one of the lucky ones also. My public school threw me out after second grade because at that time they did not know what was wrong with me or what to do and they could, there was no legal right to an eduction. The school recommended home schooling or private school. My mom(mothers did most of the parenting back then) put me in a private school and I was let back in public school for fifth grade. I did see a psychologist nobody remembers what diagnosis if any was given. I can’t prove it, but believe if my parents were not teachers I would have been locked away and forgotten in some institution. So I was both probably privileged in the old fashioned sense of the word and lucky to grow up in a less bad era for people like me.

“My autism is not a superpower. It also isn’t some kind of god-forsaken, endless fountain of suffering inflicted on my family. It’s just part of who I am as a person”. - Sara Luterman
I'm not necessarily advocating "free-range" parenting. My parents were a lot less "free range" than the parents of most other kids I knew.
For example, my parents strictly limited my TV watching. Once we finally got a TV set in the first place, when I was ten-and-a-half years old, I was allowed to watch no more than one show per day during the school year and no more than three shows per day during the summer. I feel that these limitations were a good thing, by making it easier for me to focus on schoolwork.
Fortunately the parochial school I attended was well-supervised enough that, while teasing happened, it was never allowed to escalate into physical bullying. Fortunately also, I got enough positive strokes at home from my parents to enable me to feel basically good about myself despite negativity from other kids.
Very fortunately also, my parents had enough of a background in educational methodology to tutor me well enough to ensure that I was always at or near the top of the class academically.
Another important stroke of luck: My parents had a piano. My musical abilities, in the form of spontaneously figuring out how to play the piano by ear, at the same time I was belatedly learning to talk, couldn't have manifested if there wasn't a piano in the house. Pianos are very expensive, after all, and my parents could not have afforded it on their own. The piano we had was a hand-me-down that some friend of the family had decided to get rid of, probably because a few of the keys weren't working.
In all the stories I've ever read about musical savants, the instrument that the kids figured out how to play on their own was a piano. Never a non-keyboard instrument, such as a guitar or a flute. There's a reason for this. Only keyboard instruments offer a highly intuitive, beginner-friendly, obvious visual way to see the relationships between the notes. Thus only keyboard instruments, such as a piano, are savant-friendly.
Of course, most families do not have a piano or other keyboard instrument in the house. I therefore conclude that there are probably a lot of potential musical savants out there who were never given the opportunity to manifest their abilities.
Besides having a piano or other keyboard instrument in the house, another thing most potential musical savants would probably need is the example of someone else in the family playing it regularly. In my case, my older sister played the piano at least occasionally, as did my father. On the other hand, I've read that there was a time in the early-to-mid 20th century when a lot of upper-middle-class families had a piano in the house just as a status symbol, even if no one played it. That probably didn't do much good for any potential musical savants in the family.
Fortunately, these days, inexpensive keyboard synthesizers can be bought for less than $100, and basic lessons on how to play them can be found online for free.
If every parent of an autistic child were to buy a cheap keyboard synthesizer, learn the basics of how to play it (using headphones at first, to avoid bothering one's child and other family members while still in the initial phases of learning), and then use it to play songs that their child likes, we would probably see a LOT more musical savants. Of course, not every autistic child would figure out on their own how to play the instrument under these circumstances, but I strongly suspect that a great many would -- including some otherwise severely disabled autistic children.
Also, I wonder how many families these days have home surroundings that would encourage a latent math ability.
Example: large wall calendars. One year I remember we had, in my bedroom, a large wall calendar that displayed all the months of the year, while, in the kitchen, we had a wall calendar that displayed just the current month. I rather suspect that wall calendars in general have gone out of fashion these days, thanks to smartphones and calendar apps.
Another example that has probably gone out of fashion these days: large analog clocks. These days I think it would probably be a good idea to have, in almost every small child's bedroom, both a large analog clock and a large digital clock.
Anyhow, one thing I passionately believe, based on my childhood experiences, is that the most important thing that can be done for any autistic child is to identify the child's strengths, whatever they might be, and encourage them. Alas, this is something that probably does not even occur to many parents of autistic children as something they should even try to do. But I think it's something that should be tried with even the most severely disabled-seeming children.

It was pretty "free range" for me. I was expected to be home for dinner, be there for special occasions and complete my homework on time, that was about it. No particular talent was encouraged but what was drummed into me that really helped was the idea that everybody is different. Not in a kumbaya, everybody is a beautiful kind of way, but more like this is how life works type of way. My parents would NEVER tell me I have superpowers, we were taught modesty by example, unfortunately an impairing trait in today's selfie world.
That is how I look which parenting method is best, it depends on the kid. Overall it was probably in some instances too free range then, and it is definitely way to helicopter/snowplow now.
