Giving it another thought, I see that the child is low-functioning, right? then very likely he would feel uncomfortable there, and the mother taking him to church is being HER responsability in that case, for everything that could happen, and well, is a low-functioning autistic person able to understand religion, in the first place?

I was watching CNN a few days ago, and I found some news that I thought might interest you:

A severely autistic 13-year old and his mom were banned from attending mass at their local church in Minnesota. The church's reason why they did what they did was that the boy was "disruptive and dangerous." Why? He fights, urinates, and almost knocked over children and elderly people. So they filed a restraining order against the boy and his mom so that none of those things would happen again.

So what do you think of that? 8O

They didn't kick him out because he was autistic. They kicked him out because he did stupid, inappropriate stuff that everyone knows is wrong.

Maybe. LFA isn't mental retardation who are autistic.
They have normal IQ's too or above normal but they just can't take care of themselves very well because they struggle with self help skills. Incontinence is common in LFA. Droopy and Amanda Baggs are en example of what LFA is. Droopy was the one who showed me LFA's aren't mentally ret*d just by watching her videos on youtube. Yes there are some LFA's out there who are ret*d. I have heard some people with autism also have mental retardation or people with mental retardation also have autism.

Take a look at Sue Ruben, for example. She tested as mentally ret*d, until she started using a keyboard to speak. After she learned to use the keyboard, she tested with an IQ of 136.

It's unfair to the other people to keep a monster like that at the church. If a person can't control their behaviors and they harm others or disrupt public functions then they have absolutely no business being with other people. Purposely urinating in public is repulsive and disgusting. The boy shouldn't be taken out of his home if he is that bad. And quite blaming nasty behavior as being an autistic problem because he obviously has more wrong with him them autism to act like that.

It's one thing if a person can't help such incontinence issues to the point of needing Depend's. From what I was reading, this boy was wetting himself on purpose, so that he wouldn't have to stay at the church. Those are two different things, all together. He didn't do it, all the time. Only when he was angry.

It'll be better for him in the long run not to be exposed to that mind-rotting filth.

I say: good for them for kicking out an obviously problematic individual rather than going limp-**** just because he is mentally handicapped. It isn't fair for the other churchgoers.

well, I didn't imply that was mental retardation, just that it seemed very likely that going to church and doing all the stuff they do there, would not make any sense for him, I mean, it must have something to do with social skills and stuff NTs take for granted, and understanding the concept of why people do this, and likely he would rather just do the things that he likes, alone. I hardly understand why people go the church :P

Probably he was being forced to go there because of the mother's beliefs, he seems unhappy there. It would have been better to bring the church to home, in a matter of speaking. Although, he probably wouldn't care or even like that.

And some of you wonder why I do not tell people in my church I have AS. I am not disruptive, yet it is bigoted for any faith to do this. They need to find the "root cause" , and try to help him.

Going to church isn't an NT thing. It's a religious thing. Not all god believers go to church either. My boyfriend for example and my parents.

And preludeman, the church didn't bann him because he's autistic, they banned him because he was disruptive.

I had read an article on this and it said the mother said his behavior was exaggerated or lies. So who knows what he really did. My opinion stays the same if all that is really true about him and the mother was just saying that in self defense.

If he's urinating in public and hitting old folks and other children, then the kid needs help and shouldn't even be there.

But also, the church should've been understanding and not put a restraining order on him in the first place. They should help him out rather than condemn him. That's what's wrong with religion and I cringe every time I see Christians act like they're the ones being persecuted.

I agree. The parents need to do a better job at teaching him manners and what's acceptable in society.

If he really did fight, urinate, etc. in church, then banning him was perfectly reasonable. Though it may not be fair in that he may not have been able to control himself (keep in mind that we don't know much about his mental health), I think that it would be even more unfair to let him stay and ruin everyone else's experience.

My five year old has PDD-NOS, and because the organ music and singing can be literally painful for her, my wife usually takes her to the church nursery during services. Thankfully, our church has a children's sermon in the middle of worship without music, during which our pastor invites the kids to come up to listen to a mini-sermon tailor made for children. A few of the more uptight members have occasionally voiced disapproval of my daughter's hysterics when she's caught up in the loud music, but as our pastor says, more people in our church care about her than those who are critical. I can't imagine a church, which is supposed to be an extension of your family, going to the extremes of banning a member from worship with a restraining order.
