Very important point you raised, Katie_WPG. I'm pretty sure you're correct.
If somebody was working on doing retail sales of a highly specialized clothing line because they loved it, and they were deaf or in a wheelchair, I'm sure they would encounter a lot of similar difficulties with how people respond to them in person.
They'd also deserve just as much respect and serve as an inspiration to others.
And if a reporter accurately portrayed their driving passion and the difficulties they deal with, I'd go easy on the reporter if they wrongly referred to deafness as a "disease."
