That's ridiculous, and I'm finding it increasingly difficult to believe all the stuff you're reading into a single interview.

It is not all about "The Interview"
I did not hotfoot it over from AFF, I've been a member here for a while, I tend to normally just read threads. But I had to comment after reading TM's hard done by post. Alot of people seem to be basing their opinions on just one AFF thread, The Aut Spks interview.
You need to go and read all his posts and threads from the beginning (and his sister's and girlfriend's) and you may realise why things turned on him the way they did.
Anyways, I shan't bother you good folks anymore and will the close the door on my way out.

I just want to second all this, and point out that July 2010 (cynara's sign date) does predate the article by more than a year.

The interview was tambourine-man's idea, and it was supported by a number of members on AFF who contributed questions which were then collated by tambourine-man and sent to the Autism Speaks representative.

This was never one man show, as some seem to be implying. It was a group effort.

Some people don't seem to know how to conduct themselves in a calm or civil manner, or how to engage with people with whom they disagree other than by insulting them.

It's very sad as not only has a chance for useful dialogue and input been squandered, but the petty and spiteful behaviour of a few has harmed the credibity of autistic people and their organisations, on and off-line.
Thank you Marcia, and for a similar well-reasoned post made to AFF.

Far too much of what has been directed at John Scotty looks like a pitchfork-waving attempt at censorship.

cynara, it's disappointing that you've apparently come hot-foot from AFF and made this your first post. I would have hoped for something more useful.
Dates in this instance are irrelevant and it remains disappointing that her first (and then, only) post was a whiny accusation.

My sister and girlfriend joined, at my insistence, because I was hoping they might come to better understand autism.

Thanks for helping them better understand autism. Lol.

Kat posted nothing in my defense. Nothing whatsoever.

My sister posted one well-intentioned comment, basically sayin, "Hey guy, I love my autistic brother, ain't it neat what he is doing!" and was accused of declaring the members of AFF of being a bunch of "uppity ret*ds."

She is a kind and enthusiastic 19 year-old girl!

She would never call an autistic person a ret*d. She has loved and embraced me for exactly who I am all along.

Really, you guys should be ashamed.

Obvious passive aggressive tactic is obvious.

Well, I guess you've accomplished your main goal - getting attention and 'some really cool offers'.

We autists haven't fared as well.

You'll be getting paid something for your writing.

Whether you're a good writer remains to be seen. I hope you grow into the art.

I would invite anyone to take the suggestions of some here and go review all my posts, particulary in a thread called, Elitist attitude and I'm conducting an interview with autism speaks. The makeover thread is good to.

I fought very hard to remain kind and diplomatic in the face of adversity.

Exactly she got called out for sprouting what appeared to be propaganda.

You joined AFF to immediately begin attacking me, much more viciously than you have done here.

"You autistics" would have fared a lot better had you attempted to appear civil.

Let's see if I have this straight...

Isn't this what you are REALLY trying to say to me?

Well, nice to know that the person I am arguing with wont seem to read what I am saying or take proper account of it.

How is that passive agressive? Saying that someone should be ashamed for accusing someone of something they are not is not passive-agressive. passive agressive is being agressive whilst using a cloak of not actually attacking someone with agressive words. Also petitio principii, begging the question: Something obvious is 'obvious'

Here is the incredibly rude comment:

My sisters incredibly rude comment:

I used to be very against the fundamentals that Autism Speaks seems to have established. I think that autism is one of the most beneficial and enlightening aspects to life. Through tambourine-man's research and determination to reveal the truth, I now have come to the conclusion that Autism Speaks isn't looking to make autism an extinct "disorder". Autism Speaks knows the value in each autistic individual. This organization is wanting to amplify all of these great peoples' talents and enable your abilities by making life a little easier. ADHD kids take adderall to help with hyper-active symptoms... How is that different than treating potentially impairing symptoms of autism? Don't autistics, like ADHD people, want more of a positive recognition in society. Stand up... Make yourselves know as the brilliant compliment to society you all are.

Now, let me go get the much more polite responses. (Note my sarcasm).

I spent several hours at AFF yesterday in order to read through your threads - nearly all of them - in their entirety.

Before doing so, I regarded you as a young guy who was way too full of himself, who wanted to get ahead, and who was willing to take the risk of engaging with Autism Speaks to do so - naive, surely.

What I found, in reading hundreds of posts, is a guy who is willing to do whatever it takes to get ahead, regardless of who is hurt. In particular, you are eager to pit one autist community against another, stroke egos obscenely, and try to position yourself as the liaison between autists and Autism Speaks.

On arriving at AFF, you began a campaign for the redesign of their site, in particular repeatedly asking for space on the front page for articles. You then aggresively looked for every opportunity you could to insinuate yourself and your articles into the site.

Nearly every post you made was about you.

The "cheering section" comments that some have misunderstood have to do with your having recruited at least two women in your life to engage on your behalf on AFF. It did not go well and you grossly exaggerated the appropriate responses of people at AFF. Now you whine about it here.

You are entirely self serving and don't give a damn what happens to the rest of us as long as you get what you want.

Shame on you.

You sound privileged. This reads too much like 'you uppity ret*ds are acting so selfish and ungrateful, can't you see this neurotypical organization is trying to help you?"
