I think her killing the child to protect him from a child pornography/abuse ring isn't justifiable either. The fact that he's autistic makes it even MORE horrible than ever. Murder of a child is NEVER justified. NEVER.

And the first report I had read about this on Huffington News (I THINK) said she asked for her attorney on the way to the Bellvue Hospital. She wasn't that drugged up or distraught if she knew she needed/wanted an attorney! Of course, it could be the way it was reported, but it seemed to me that was before she was even mirandized. Soooo again

NO EXCUSE for murder. And it is more costly to kill her via the legal system than to put her for life in jail no parole. So, let her stay in her cell, 23 hours a day, and rot away. Knowing that little boy is in heaven reaping all his rewards while she can rot and try to come to grips with the guilt and the shame.

Agreed, is disheartening... my question is whether that sort of response is derived from the experiential means through which those on the spectrum tend to derive expectations of behavior in themselves and in others - in this case, due to being marginalized and abused themselves to varying degrees, that they then see that behavior justified when extrapolated to apply to another person. Just random thoughts at entirely too early of a Sunday morning.

The aunt had received an email with a cry for help from the woman.

The woman must have been completely desparate and unable to see a way forward, I would imagine that she ended the child's life out of kindness, not being able to see a future for either him or herself. I understand that she may have been temporarily insane and may have had distorted thinking but I doubt that she killed the child in cold blood, which is what murder is.

I have the utmost compassion for anyone who finds life so difficult that all they can see is that death would be preferable; it is a very, very dark and sad place to be.

Might be too early but I suspect you're on the right track with this one. I know my previous abuse had me wanting to tear this woman limb from limb when I first read the story.

Do I feel sympathy for her depression and suicidal nature? Only so much that it "caused" her to do this horrible thing IF her suicidal nature is real and isn't just a legal ploy to get away with it. That's it.

If someone is truly suicidal, they will do better at the attempts. I know this as I have had a friend, a boyfriend and my first husband all commit suicide. And two more friends who attempted but did not succeed. None of them tried to take anyone with them though.

Thanks, hb - I wasn't expecting a response so early on a Sunday... heck, I wasn't planning on being up, but my back had other plans. I think I can relate to your second passage, regarding sympathy - there is no way to condone what she has done, and my ability for compassion is somewhat limited to her state that presaged and led up to this tragic event, with a small dose of skepticism still present. Have lost people to suicide, dealt with my own thoughts and opinions on suicide, and have taken the gun out of the hands of a person who was about to... it is a scary situation, both for the person who is driven to that point, and for those who would seek for them to stay.

Yep, still morning. Will try again later once the caffeine has taken hold.

Mak,

I was being interviewed for a radio show at 10 a.m. and I need to wake up at least 2 hours before the time I need to START getting ready to do something. LOL I don't know if that is due to autism or another of my differences... so I was up early :) And I've already had the benefit of caffiene.

I was quite as emotional as others who wanted bloodshed when I first heard this story even before I knew the kid was autistic (the first article I had read hadn't mentioned it). Even if his autism isn't the reason she killed him... she still killed him and I don't know how much sympathy I could have for a person, no matter their level of "insanity" temporary or otherwise.

I have been in some dark places in my life. Even after I had kids and yet I never, not once, contemplated taking them with me.

Of course, as someone else pointed out, she must clearly not have been in her right mind unless she's a sociopath and is manipulating the situation, which still remains to be seen.

I am skeptical. Very skeptical.

Oh my god, how horrible I hope she burns in hell. There is no excuse to kill any child. She is very wealthy and her lawyers will find some excuse to get her the lightest sentence possible.

I actually feel sorry for her. I've read a couple of the reports and it sounds like she needed help for quite a while and her actions do not appear to have been done out of hatred for her son.

What she did was awful, but now that her suicide bid has failed, she will have to live with that for the rest of her life.

If she was poor, living in the Bronx, and turned on the gas, it would have never made the news.

This is news because she was rich, and besides her apartment in New York, she could also stay in hotels that you can't afford one night.

The economic downturn has caused many to take their lives, often taking the spouse with them, but that is not news.

40,000 murders, 75,000 just go missing without a trace, and that is not news.

100,000 a year go to the hospital for something simple, catch something fatal, and that is not news.

She was held in Wyoming when she reported her son raped by devil worshipers, doctors said he was not, and a mental evaluation said she was a bit over the edge.

She fits the description of not guilty due to mental illness left untreated.

She will go to a private mental hospital, have the best lawyers, and be out in a short time.

In family life, men kill themselves, women kill their children.

Her other ex husband, not the boy's father, is mentioned, the father most likely killed himself.

Suicide is often contagious.

Tragic, but not uncommon.

Rubbish. Both parents can be responsible for killing their children. There have been several high profiile cases of the biological father killing the child/ren out of revenge or due to mental illness. Equally, many mothers commit suicide on their own and without taking anyone else with them

I hope the little bit of prison time they get is spent being rapped at mutilated by the prison inmates who hate baby killers. Its sad that criminals have more compassion for children then the jurries and judges.

Actually, speaking of such I find the murder of the child to be completely within the realm of psychotic behavior or atleast someone whom, has little or no value of human life to put it simply..Actually, I've been seeing a large number of murders of autistic people children and teenagers alike which to me is not something I find hopeful in terms of how the NT world interacts with us.. If it's okay I managed to come across a news story myself which is of a similar themed nature in that it involves an autistic person being murdered but in a realm of complete absurdity of thought..Anyways feel free to read the article if you sincere & honestly wish..
