I'm not particularly active but come April I tell everyone I know, and I mean EVERYONE to not give a dime to the organization, because many "kids based" companies like Toys R' Us like to donate for the organization as a thing for "autism awareness" month. I remember telling the cashier at Toy's R Us last April exactly why I will not donate to their organization and they looked really shocked. :p

I personally have a huge jiff with "autism awareness" since usually it's not awareness at all but usually just "omg my cousin's aweteastic feel bad for her 1 like = 1 prayerz". Education, people! That's what I support. Not this "feel sowwy" crap. Autistics, wherever they lie on the spectrum, need to become empowered and learn that while life is more difficult, some moreso than others, that they can get help and acceptance for who they are because people learn what it actually means. It's easy to feel pity but I do not pity myself despite the challenges I faced in my life, and that is what helped lead me to my (relative) success. Growing up autistic is about learning how to do things the way your brain learns them. This organization is basically fueled by the pity engine, so actual education is how you target this gross problem and ultimately make life better for all autistics, regardless of where they lie on the spectrum.

For example...

Because of lack of education, many people read "Lack of empathy" as "Unable to feel love for others" which all of us know is NOT TRUE. What it means scientifically is that we have trouble putting ourselves in other people's shoes sometimes, but it doesn't mean we don't love other people! And that's just the tip of the iceberg people.

A fairly broad post that covers more than just AS, I know, but is applicable.
