You have lost a child. I pray every day that I will never truly know what that feels like. I don't see how much anything could be as painful. I am so sorry for your loss. I know you get alot of crap for how you defend Autism Speaks. I personally detest the organization. I cannot see how you could have anything but positive feelings for them, though, if representatives from the group had been there lending support during your most difficult times. I assume that is what happened with you.

You often do get super negative about ideas different from your own. I do not know if it is intentional or not, but, PARTICULARLY WHEN YOU SCREAM IN HERE you do come across as quite cruel, and, yeah, pompous.

I do believe that you are a person with so much to share with others who are hurting, and that you are a truly caring person, but that is SO not how you present. Also, there are many of us [myself included] who are PROUD autistics. And there are so many of us who are fighting for Autistics to receive the treatment and respect we deserve.

Last month,we had a little retreat for autistics in Colorado. There was a lot of fun. There were friendships started. We did not stay on schedule as well as we should have [which did lessen the experience for some] and there were 2 presentations [one of them mine] that were never presented. Now, I wish that those things had not happened, and now that we have a planning committee, hopefully next year they won't.

But, we were definitely succesful in the 2 areas I felt most important. One,because the majority of Autistics have low self-esteem,[ a lifetime of being bullied and being treated'less than" will do it] i was determined that every attendee felt cherished and loved. We were 100% succesful there. Our second priority was to give hope and tools to work on changing lives for Autistics. We were succesful in that area as well. You see, most of us have been taught our entire lives why we can't accomplish this or that. We need support on how we can. And, while still respecting our disabilities and personal limitations, we, as a group, CAN accomplish so much. I believe that we can not only improve the lives of our autistic brothers and sisters, but improve the lives of many NTs' as well.[ long term]

Please, constructive, postitive [ while remaining humble] ideas for what we CAN do, on yourpart would be appreciated.

Sometimes I get so confused while I write, and I know my grammar can be atrocious. I receive almost no criticism for either of those weaknesses, so,I really do not think that for people who have a problem with you, it is because of your writing style.

I do believe there is love in your heart. Perhaps you need to find a different way to make it shine?

And any type of Aspie only community..would multiply the issue of human stagnation..by multiple fold...

How would an Autistic community cause more stagnation than an NT community? Autistics are much less likely than NT to have a "lemming like" mentality. Much more likely to respect individuality.

Diversity..all human diversity is necessary for human beings to survive...

Oh wow. Then why did you 'cure' your autism?

It takes a full human village for FULL POTENTIAL AT survival..

It does take a village for our kids [and ourselves] to reach our Autistic best. How is the NT culture positivvely encouraging our kids?

Not a dam exclusive club...

Absolutely. No one should have to be a scapegoat, an omega, for this seriously messed up NT run society.

And Autistics.. the higher functioning kind..about 99% of folks from my experience online..are among the worst offenders at excluding folks who communicate or act a little differently than what they PERSONALLY THINK IS their OWN norm....

I truly do not know if it is intentional or not, but you often come across as pompous and you say things that hurt peoples feelings...alot. They are not being offenders as much as defenders of themselves and their values.

That ain't how the big picture of life..works...

but of course there are hundreds of pieces of peer reviewed research that backs up that sentiment...

IT WILL NEVER WORK..

Do you not know how arrogant you are coming across? And kind of mean? And WHY WHY WHY are you implying that you, a person who believes himself to be "cured" from this "disease," would have a clue what would be best for a portion of Autistics{ I NEVER said all Autistics] who feel that for them, being in a community of other supportive Autistics, would be the ideal way to be and encourage others to be their Autistic best?

CAUSE FOLKS HERE GENERALLY SPEAKING AND AT LEAST EVIDENCED ON THIS SITE...and other online autistic sites..

SIMPLY WILL NOT BEND AND COOPERATE WITH OTHERs WHO THEY VIEW AS A LITTLE TOO FAR OUT OF THEIR

PERSONAL SOCIAL NORM...EVEN WHEN IT comes to a friggin style of writing that is a little different than the norm...

When I come to WP, I feel accepted. I feel understood. And when I have asked for help, others have "cooperated" and given it.

And i have collected reams and reams of evidence for that..in my own research as a social scientist....

And, as an Autistic who is appalled at the high unemployment rate among Autistics, the rate[ 28 times higher] of attempted, planned, and successful suicide among our young people, I have plenty of documentation to MORE than strongly suggest that autistic people. in general, are not exactly thriving in this NT ruled world.

that provides enough evidence..i think...to present a compelling case for what i am saying here...

Yeah, me too. I can drag out more stats if you wish.

And all that autreat stuff is only for folks who carry the same ideology..been there done that..in scores of discussions...where if ya don't believe the way we do..see ya later..alligator....or WE WILL BAN YA..OR YOU ARE NOT WELCOME BACK or WHATEVER....

One, Autreat no longer exists. It did though, positively impact many peoples' lives for many years. Not all autistics would want to attend. We are all different people, and what is good for one person is not what is best for all. As far as you not feeling welcome, it was always made clear that this was an event for individuals who were looking to celebrate their "Autistic wonderfulness, not those who wanted to "cure it." Apart from that, there is no denying that there were some problems with Autreat. People who have been a part of Autreat, often feel that one person having final say in everything presented problems. Something is now being put together to replace Autreat by a group of Autistic individuals, something that will embrace the positive sides of it while addressing the problems.

SO CALLED NT'S ARE NECESSARY..iF I wanna be sane..in this REAL WORLD...REGARDLESS OF IF I CURE MY AUTISM LIKE I HAVE NOW...or in the day..where i regressed and a light bulb at night was like the sun at midday..

How were they nevessary [and Autistics not]

and a cricket sounded like a friggin freight train..and i could NOT talk at all.....at age 47....with severe regression like a 24 month old child....

That is one of my arguments in support of an autistic community. Autistics understand and would be more likely to address sensory issues.

Everyone here by the time they get my age..if they go into autistic burnout..better hope there's an NT somewhere to lend a hand..as this just ain't something most autistic folks could deal with..on a day to day basis...

I am older than you. i agree that autistic burnout is the pits and would probably be much less likely to occur in an autistic community.I had autistic burnout. big-time. I had a total breakdown, and it was triggerred by a group of horrendously cruel NTs'. And the good NTs'? Too scared of losing their social status to stand up and tell the truth. The Autistic community helped to ave my life.

http://katiemiaaghogday.blogspot.com/20 ... ctrum.html

like my so called NT wife did..when i needed caregiving...24/7.....back in those dead days...in 2008..for me...

I'm glad you are doing better.

And i DO MEAN 24/7 CARE...BEYOND WHAT ANY NURSING HOME SERVICES..COULD EVEN REASONABLY PROVIDE..JUST FOR ME TO MAKE IT TO THE next second....

I understand, except nursing home services are not great. Again, I am glad you are doing better. And that you have a supportive wife. So many Autistics have nobody during hard times.

Most Autistic folks need NT's more than autistic folks..whether they want to face the facts of life or not...

Speak for yourself, a person who caims to be 'cured" of being Autistic.

But that's just my opinion..per my personal experience..and technical research in life....

And that is my ...per my personal experience of being an Autistic woman who is not ashamed of it and feels a responsibility to her brothers and sisters...and my technical research [ yes... I am ready to hear how inferior my research is to yours.][/quote] my words exactly my friend :D

Respecting diversity, including the NT culture, does not by any means translate to not being pissed at the horrific atrocities that have been committed, and are still being committed against the vast majority of Autistics. Nor does it mean simply shrugging our shoulders at what is happening rather than acknowledging the truth and ACTIVELY seeking solutions, just to prove that we do not discriminate against NTs'. We need to ensure that our young people and future generations of Autistics have what they need to enable them to be their most successful Autistic best. Us versus them? I am not going to fear stepping on politicaly correct eggshells , not when our suicide rate is 28 times higher than theirs, our employment rates are so low, and MOST Autistics are saying that they do not wish to procreate because they do not believe they have potential to be incredible parents, or, worse yet, they might produce a child wired similarly to themselves.

I want to know how he claims to know what MOST of us think and feel...

AND how he presumes to talk for me... one of the high functioning...

I am certainly not offended, I just think neurotypical people are important to, I personally feel my life woulld not be improved by an aspie state, I still like to associate with non autistics like my brother and such. But everyone has their own opinion.

I was patient on this site for almost three years..and listened patiently to folks trapped in conflict with the us vs them ideology that is extremely harmful to any human being in my opinion....

i am human..and i no longer have patience for it...

I see it as disgusting..(the us vs them ideology)..hateful..and i know it's a waste of my time to even attempt to stop a freight train of what i see as hatefulness...

So ..i apologize for commenting here..as there is no escape for folks with US vs them..hateful ideologies..i come to know now..it seems...and that is certainly not just limited to folks with an autism spectrum diagnosis..it is rampant everywhere in society..and just brings people down ..so they can overall be controlled by folks..who stay above the fray..of conflict..

A futile exercise is all i see it as...so please carry on as ya please...

This internet thingy is no longer the mainstay of my life...TG.

And by the way.. i never scream..HERE..i'm just asserting what i understand as truth...IN CAPS...HERE.

That is all..and again..take it all with a grain of salt if ya like..it's just MY OPINION..IS ALL.

I am pissed at society for that to...but its not just autistics getting the worst of it, there is a lack of proper treatment for mental illness and lots of stigma towards that, I have even seen comments on this very site encouraging stigma towards mental illness or people with specific mental illnesses. Then of course there is the poor, once again even in this site there is 'they're just not trying hard enough and are lazy and welfare is a waste of money' sentiment on here So I am pissed at society, but its not 'all' NTs I have a problem with also I don't feel autistics are immune to things like ignorance or being judgmental so I have a hard time seeing how an aspie only state would be beneficial....there would still be problems and not everyone would get along just because they have autism and well it wouldn't be neurodiverse. I guess I see the problems with society as a human problem, not a problem specifically with NTs. Lots of NTs are pissed at society to, so I don't see how cutting neurotypicals out of the picture is a solution to these problems.

As for procreating, I certainly don't think I'd be a good parent....not just because I have autism so I think that automatically means I shouldn't. Its more I have enough difficulty trying to take care of myself due to the way having autism and various co-morbids effects me so I don't see where I would get the energy or functioning ability to take care of a child. Though I am sure there are autistics who would make great parents...but I think there are valid reasons for some of us to feel we'd be terrible parents.

How about a tribe?

This would allow us to live in the country of our choosing. We are indigenous after all. Our history closely fits many aboriginal people. As a tribe, we might have more power collectively than as many individuals.

My house and yard is my "tribal land", but as a tribe, we could have our own "reservations" or communities. Who knows? As a tribe we might even have our own sovereign nations.

It would solve the problem of having NT children, because they are part of a family who is in the tribe. That would also solve the problem of finding people to do jobs Autistic people can't/won't or otherwise unsuited for.

A phyle? That's been suggested many times before. The question is, how do we go about starting it? What sort of businesses could it own and run? Anything that could be done online, where Autists have an advantage?

I say we call it Genosha.

Seriously, though.
I'm a tech & web developer, there are a lot of coders among us, a lot of artists, and a lot of writers & media folks.

We could start our own online entertainment collective, make apps & games to make it interactive, have cinematic and theatrical elements., etc.
Once established as an income base we could start investing in more conventional things like science & engineering 'cause we 've got a lot of those too.
It could expand from there.
It's an idea, a doable one with enough people & backing.

So, how should we start? How do we prevent entryism - mandatory demonstration of diagnosis? :? A web of trust?

Before that, perhaps we can create an online hub to serve as a proto-phyle, to have a place to discuss all this? A social network geared towards Autists? A collection of resources for Autists?

I am SO loving the direction this thread is going! We ARE starting an autistic community within a community. in about a year and a half in Thornton Colorado. one house at a time. Ten year plan involves businesses, single family homes, retiree centers, and a chance for Autistic kids to grow up surrounded by an awareness of their awesomeness,

There will be so much more discussion on this at next years AutHaven,. True long term planning if you want to be part of it. Lots of other cool stuff if you don't.

Neurodivergent Labs is already in the baby steps of putting high tech employment opportunities together for ,"Autistics. Star Ford, the author of "A Fieldguide to Earthlings," and the one building Ocate Cliffs in NM. is also the founder of Neurodivergent Labs. She will be speaking next year at AutHaven, as she did earlier this year.

Guys, we CAN do this!
