the way NTs see us
I'm becoming more and more disappointed by the increasing number of people who don't seem to understand the roots of the term "NT." Many NT's have very serious problems as "normal" as they may seem to each other. I don't understand why that fact is ever disputed or not recognized.

I'm not likely to be around much longer. As before when I first signed up here years ago, I'm finding that after a long hiatus, and after only a few days back on here, I'm spending way too much time here again already. So I'm requesting my account be locked, banned or whatever. It's just time. Until then, well, I dunno...
Aspies find understanding and empathy difficult to NTs because NTs are different to Aspies in some ways. But NTs also find understanding and empathy difficult to Aspies because Aspies are different to NTs in some ways. So NTs and Aspies alike are just as bad as eachother. So that is why I really can't understand why they use ''lack of empathy'' to put down on the Autistic criteria as one of the common traits, because everybody is like it to anyone who is different in some way.
So it's like, NTs are allowed to have a lack of empathy for Aspies, but when it comes to Aspies having the same lack of empathy for NTs it is considered a problem.
Doesn't anyone get it? I really don't think it's fair.
It's not fair. NT's don't get told they lack empathy nor do they get corrected for their lack of empathy. I have corrected someone once. Not in a scoldy way but the person was being a complete hypocrite and putting me in my place for something they would have done too if someone was putting them down.
NT's can be helped in this area. They just aren't aware they too lack empathy thanks to psychiatry only stamping us and those with personality disorders as lack of empathy.
I am under the impression that some NT's may fear addressing their own issues. Has anyone here noticed how it makes someone who is considered "normal" get really pissed off if you mention a flaw or something that could be changed for the better if it has to do with themself and how personal it becomes? Meanwhile you are having all your own flaws aired out in the open with no regard to how you feel. It's as if you aren't really even there.

Looking at myself and other aspies I´ve met I´ve seen a lot of misguided empathy, but not much lack of it.
Some aspies have a problem with imagination, they need some sort of solid evidence of others pain to be able to feel sorry for them. A hypothetical suffering is not real and can therefor not induce empathy. So they might not feel sorry for starving africans (for example) because these africans are only words, not flesh and blood, until they can be proved to exist and proved to suffer.
On another note, an aspie girl I briefly knew believed she shared some sort of deeper understanding with homeless people in general by hanging out with them, even when they exploited her.
Just an example of misguided empathy, I´m not saying the majority of aspies are like this.
I think again the problem is you can´t give a fair picture of aspies by judging them by NT standards. Sometimes it´s reminiscent of the concept of nature as good or evil, like nature has a will of it´s own and that if it exists it can be compared to human civilization.

In my humble opinion, Autistics empathize better when they have first hand experience or direct experience with regards to a given situation.

A lot of people don't understand Autism so they react out of fear and ignorance. What i have seen is THAT most people become familiar with Autism ONLY when it personally affects them in some way. Often-times, spending vast amounts of time with others who have knowledge of Autism gives you a skewed perspective on just how many people are really aware of this neurological difference. In the grand scheme of things, autism is probably not on the mind of the average stranger who passes you on the street. The days of pleasant smiles and friendly greetings from complete strangers have all but completely vanished(depending upon where you live).
My advice to you, is not to take it personally because it's NOT JUST YOU who receives and gives this type of treatment to others. These are strangers and your self-worth is not determined by their fleeting glances and lifeless stares. They have their own issues and concerns that are unrelated to you.
I know it does not make it any better but what you are experiencing is not an Autism thing; it's a societal thing. You can go to any NT site and there are people describing exactly what you have described here. It's simply part of the society in which we live.

@ OP, albeit two months late:
The dimwits are the nails that stick out perceptually speaking (ie. the blatant judgers). You can trust that most other NT's aren't too excited about these people either.

Wrong.
NTs may be misinformed, but in general, they aren't evil. You need to be less judgemental.
Magneto, Xavier, calm down now. I thought we agreed to disagree?
I think this is why education is important.
Ignorant NT's do see me as ret*d sometimes but then they will have a change of heart when they find out the difficulties I struggle with.
I have gotten better over the years determining the difference between malice and simple ignorance but I still struggle with it.
