When people talk about curing autism, they aren't talking about curing us. They're talking about curing the lowest-functioning of the low-functioning, who engage in self-injurious behaviors and can't even talk. The autistic people who feel trapped in their own bodies. The ones who end up having to go to group homes because they weren't given a fair chance at life. If you don't want these people to have a chance at a decent life because "the cure will erdicate us!! !!!111", then you are very selfish people. Don't get me wrong, I was diagnosed with AS when I was 4, and it's been no joyride. But still, you guys have it better off than you think you do. Get real, support a cure for low-functioning autism.

there are low-functioning people that post here. just because you are low-functioning does not mean you want to be cured.

I can pick up that it might even be socially unacceptable in certain forums to admit you want a cure.

Agreed. We should look at improvement, not total shifts to NT-ness. :)

Then how, pray tell, do you know they feel trapped?

I think they might be able to write, don't they?

If my (presumably NT) young cousin were to be accidentally struck in the larynx, destroying his ability to speak, he would not suddenly be proclaimed low functioning. That is to say, the hinge upon which an autist - or anyone - is declared low functioning is not (solely) their verbosity.

And the fact of the matter is that the bulk of LFA people are voiced in some manner. It is more likely that they have intellectual difficulties, particularly in expressing their needs, affecting all of their communication channels. I cannot recall, in my four or so years at WP, anyone like that posting here. It doesnt even seem reasonable to expect it.

The closest I can recall is a young gentleman - and I use the term loosely - who ranted and raved inarticulately that everyone here were simply not Aspies... only he was. He even called Tony Attwood a fake. He was obviously of too low intelligence to be cast as an aspie, claims aside, but none of his diatribes ever mentioned a lack of speaking ability. I rather expect he was an earful in his offline life too.

Furthermore, it is not possible to feel loss of something without having experienced it. Ask a congenital blind person if they feel trapped by their lack of sight. They might express wonder as to what it is like, but they cannot miss that which they never had.

All of you are right, except for the OP. :) GO WRONGPLANET! WRONG PLANET 4EVER!

I want to be cured of the way people treat me with discrimination, and I want to be cured of the clinical depression that comes from that. I want to be cured of my understimulation problem, which causes most of my other problems. I do not want to be cured of my ASD other than that.

So what you're saying is that because the person has never experienced the ability to communicate, they would not want to experience this opportunity? There are MANY blind people that would wish to see if they had the opportunity. It would be much easier for them to survive. I also believe that many autistic people would want a normal life if they had the opportunity to live one.

AND I can't believe that you people have the audacity to call me a troll. I actually do have Asperger's Syndrome, and I do not wish to be verbally abused because of my opinion. The fact of the matter is that you have absolutely no idea what it is like to have low-functioning autism. AUTISM SPEAKS DOES NOT WANT TO CURE YOU. They want to cure severe autism.

Think of the kids with LFA who's parents are putting them through ABA each day, who don't wish to be cured, who feel that their parents hate them, but they can't verbalize it. Think of the ones who love their bread and pizza, but are forced to be on a gluten free diet. That's child abuse.
