Apparently the FedGov thinks so. Your tax dollars at work.

Quote:
Face of autism too white?

By Brian McCready, Milford Bureau Chief

Amity Regional School District officials say it just doesn’t make sense: Why is the district being punished for having too many white autistic kids?

And it’s the federal government’s punishment that is raising tempers — cutting the crucial funding used to educate the autistic students.

It’s a thorny issue for all sides. When one racial group — black, white or otherwise — appears to be getting a disproportionate amount of special education funding, red flags go up at the federal Department of Education. But local educators said they are powerless to control the racial makeup of their community and who is diagnosed with autism, which is under the special education umbrella.

Bit of a strange rule. The spread of disabilities, syndromes and sicknesses across people, differ per population and race (and yes, as a former biochemist I have enough knowledge to say that) . It could be possible that autism is more found in caucasian/white people. (Another factor could be the different socio-economic status of ethnic groups, but I do not have enough knowledge about that area.)

But this rule seems to be a bit idealistic and not decided in a scientific way.

I think that it's too limiting, with organizations like Autism Speaks.

I thought autism was genetically a Caucasian thing, and that it was hypothesized that people of other racial groups who were diagnosed had Fragile X or something similar that presented as being superficially the same as autism. If that's the case, maybe this state are just more on top of it with correct diagnosis than other states? And then it seems even more silly that the government want to mess it up!

I also read some of the comments that people have left after the article - and was reminded why I now use WP to voice my opinions and discuss current events! Everyone here seems so sensible and articulate, and then I find myself in the outside world reading people's opinions in other districts of cyberspace, and it's a bit of a culture shock... kind of reminds me of "The Beach", when Richard went on the rice run!

I agree completely. We should make strides to ensure we have an exactly equal amount of white, black, Asian and middle eastern autistics in future.

It's really a class issue. White people are also among those who slip between the cracks because of their socioeconomic status.

Bingo.

And even though I'm white I would've never known about my aspergers had someone who knew me better than the expensive doctors brought it up. The DX itself is costly and so is getting a good doctor or a doctor specialized in that field.

In NL the DX is free and still it is mostly a 'white' disease.

Same in Belgium, I didn't pay anything for my DX and also mostly a white condition.

Sorry, but am I wrong in thinking that in countries where white people are the majority that there will always be more white people diagnosed?
