Why protest autism speaks?

Seems legit to me.

Legit yes

they ligitemetly want to cure autiam- to make us all "normal"

they legitametly want to develope prnatal testing- so parents can abort thier unborn autistic children so not to burdden the parents

They legitimatly and meaningfully only show the "bad side," and difficulties that autism can bring and children on thev "low unctioning end," - to strike fear into the hearts of the masses and solicate donations

they legitamatly DON"T have a single autistic on thier employement or board

they legitametly have called/staked war on autism

they legitametly Don't want to hear anything about Nuero diversty.


They legitamatly try to mak autistics feel bad about who they are

they legitamatly DON"T want the world to see us as humans who are diffrent but humans with a HORRID disease

they want to elimanate autism and all autistic. They don't care what we have to say and thinks the world a better place without us.

I love the autism awareness ribbon but the autism speaks symbol inforiates me

I think thier symbol very well depicts thier view on us.

if you look at autism as a puzzle and you use autism speaks to :put it togeather," all thier pieces make is a mess and an inaccurate picture.

Basicly all they have is edge pieces-all they show is one end of the spectrum-all they want is for the world to have is one view of autism.

Yes I know many autistics hate the ribbon but I love the ribon because it truely is unque an beutyful. To me each piece symbolizes how unque each person with autism is and that none of as are exactly the same but when you step back and look you see the true beuaty of the autism spectrum. Again I see things diffrent then most anybody. I don't look at it as "part of my brain are missing," or "I am a puzzle," Though I have to be honest being told I am puzzling is a complament to mee it means I make people use THIER brains

What is legitimate about claiming to help a group by denigrating them and researching means of enacting genocide against them?

You know what's wrong with abortion?

Just reading about this makes me very angry. I can remember shopping for a support site online. I quickly came across Autism Speaks, WrongPlanet, etc. I read about Autism Speaks, and wow did they seem to have a nice appeal. Then I read some in WrongPlanet and quickly realized that the people of WrongPlanet didn't seem to like Autism Speaks. I wondered why. Then I learned why---and you know the reasons. So I joined WrongPlanet and have not regretted it.

What really upset me is Autism Speaks wanting to push cures. This reminds me of the old psychiatric hospitals trying to lobotomize and use shock therapy in order to "cure" patients. Many of us don't want cured. I know I don't want cured. In my opinion, how do you cure a difference? I don't like them thinking that we are in need of being cured. I am happy with who I am.

And I have read about the aborting of pregnancies because of having an autistic baby, Down's baby, etc. That makes me sick. To me it is a crime to abort such a pregnancy. It aggravates me that many organizations think that non-NT people are defective.

I went to hear a speaker at our local library about a year ago. She was speaking about her autistic son, who was present at the speech. She also brought her new book to sell. Her message written on the book's cover was about autism's hidden blessings. I am thinking, "That sounds great." I thought it was going to be about gifts of autism that people don't often see, or haven't been discovered yet. I bought the book. You know what the lady's message is? That autism is like a monster covering up the real person---and that within the real person is a blessing---but the blessing is hidden because of autism. I am thinking, "Aghhh!! !"

You know what we can do here at the WrongPlanet? We can be an even more powerful voice than Autism Speaks. The WrongPlanet is famous. It is a powerful voice. We need to be advocates and become a force to be heard by the world that we with autism are human beings with the potential of benefitting the world. I know that many of us disagree about certain issues pertaining to facets of our autism. But, I think most of us agree that we are worthwhile and deserve to have a voice.

Because everybody deserves the right to live

Autism is not a disease

We are not sick

We are not walking tragedies

We can speak for ourselves.

Most of us don't want a cure.

They want to wipe us out.

They want to develope a genetic test that will lead to abortion

First of all, tangerine12, since you also posted a thing about abortion, i wonder if you are legitimately wondering these things or trying to stir up conflict. If you are really wondering, then my apologies, by all means keep asking questions.

On this site, our official opinion on Autism Speaks is that it has a negative effect on autism awareness and pride. If you disagree, that's okay, but understand that your views aren't shared by the site creator or many users. It's a matter, at least partly, of opinion. This site is primarily for people who want to take pride in our condition, not people who want to be cured. You can still be on here, obviously, but please understand that there is a difference of opinion on this.

PS. For the record, as a feminist i am pro-choice, and i understand if a woman honestly doesn't feel she can cope with a 'low-functioning' autistic child, and it is her right to abort it, although i wish she would look into adoption or doing her best with the baby instead. But the point is that abortion should be a last resort, not a means of weeding out 'undesirables,' as Autism Speaks would make it.
