I just got done watching My Name Is Khan, and I was pretty much amazed.
This movie isn't ABOUT Autism. It's an amazing movie with an Autistic main character. I've been hoping to see something like this for a long time!
Two warnings, however. Firstly, the movie is 165 minutes long. That's a serious commitment.
Secondly, the first half and the second half of the film have fairly different tones and subject matter. If you love Bollywood, you'll hate the first half, and if you hate Bollywood, you'll hate the second half.
The plot of the movie involves a man named Rizwan Khan, who is born in India to a doting mother. The story follows his immigration to America, conflicts with his jealous brother and his efforts to win the heart of a beautiful Hindi girl. It realistically depicts both his limitations because of being Autistic, as well as his talents and strengths. I am sure opinions will vary on how "accurately" Asperger's Syndrome is depicted in the film, but I for one believe it is extremely accurate.
Thematically, the movie deals prominently with the experience of immigrants, as well as important issues regarding the treatment of Muslims in America before and after 9/11. In the second half of the movie, the tone shifts away from "this is a man who is autistic" to "this is a man who is a devout Muslim and a proud American citizen". It gets a little farfetched, but not as much as a lot of Bollywood movies, and certainly not even half as unbelievable as Forrest Gump! It does showcase similar allegorical tales of America, but from a very different perspective.
Anyhow, i was really impressed.
