Yeah, but everyone knows that autism is created by eating canned cranberry sauce that touches gravy on your plate.

LOL, this has come to the attention of the world that not only was it wrong, but it was KNOWN AS AN ELABORATE FRAUD BY Andrew Wakefield, WHEN PERPETRATING IT!

I can not tell you the people that were at each other's throats, cursing the government, tearing each other apart when life is difficult enough without all that animosity. There must be a special place in Hades reserved for Andrew Wakefield.

Merle

and anyway, you only get Asperger's Syndrome if the black olives touch BOTH the cranberry sauce and gravy.

That used to be my favorite food. I ate to much of it and developed a condition I was born with called Nathan Young syndrome. Gravy mixed in least on the edges makes for yum.

Yep, just read this on Yahoo! and was about to post it myself.

This kind of fraud is precisely what we are warned against in graduate school when writing our research proposals--guess this guy wasn't paying attention/chose not to.

I'm glad he was exposed. Parents not vaccinating their children can cause/has caused mini-epidemics.

Imagine a scenario where lots of people believed such a theory and many parents refused to vaccinate. It would put nations at critical risks for intentional and non-intentional spreading of infectious diseases. On a scale between 1 - 10 as for national security the issue is about a 0.050 as is.

the wakefield fans are now posting articles on this witchhunt of their hero. articles on how the facts that are wrong, how the researcher showing the fraud are motivated by money, and how "big pharma" is sponsoring all this to shut wakefield up.

now he is a martyr. im not sure its better. but it sure is true.

people get invested in their beliefs and find it difficult to let them go. I mean, if it were the other way, and it was found that Autism WAS caused by vaccinations, would you be ready to throw out all your opinions and embrace the new science so easily?

I remember learning about religious groups with charismatic leaders that decided the rapture would begin one October 23, 1844 was the date and they all gave away their land and houses and all personal possessions and stood in thin cotton robes waiting to meet their Maker - and got rather chilled as the sun finally set and they were hungry for their dinner.

But they were undaunted, and the charismatic leader came up with a plausible story and the little group set up a new time and date. Eventually they became the Seventh Day Adventists.

It's to bad these disagreements have to result in harshness. If vaccine causes autism people were more nice when applicable and the people that are against them would be more understanding of their feelings I think this would be more productive.

Any evolutionarily natural view of autism would also be offended. This aside from an entirely social and psychological point of view we have parents and in general the public fearful to protect children. The compromise which I don't know the science of is to remove mercury from vaccines. I did see an article about genetically modified fruits delivering vaccines but then the green folks who are tied to the anti-vaccine politics may have a problem with it.

Also big pharmaceutic would make less money from vaccines then and so both special interests would have to answer to the objection if objected to. This is where national and public health security would be more relevant politically as the availability of the compromise would solely be mainstream political and more obvious. Sometimes figuring out the problem with these issues is not so very clear.

Mercury was removed from vaccines in 2002, and there was no change in the diagnosis rate.

See then I do not see what the fuss is all about. I think I recall the issue being now immunological? Whereas some individuals have a compromised immune system and the vaccines interact with this poorly?

Even in Japan, where measles, mumps, and rubella are given as 3 separate vaccines, their autism rate was not even lowered at all.
