Hey! I haven't posted here in quite a while but I'm riled. Cafe Press is giving 10% of their proceeds this month to Autism Speaks. I'm letting people know in case your gut feeling and conscience is stronger than your desire for designer T-shirts and teddy bears :)

Better yet, write to them and post on FB. I did.

If you don't want to support Autism Speaks, you probably shouldn't post on Wrong Planet either...

Actually it seams most of wrong planet disagrees with, dislikes or outright hates Autism Speaks because of the way they portray us.

At first I assumed you thought otherwise because you just joined, then I noticed, you've actually got quite a few posts. So now I'm curious what makes you think www.wrongplanet.net stands behind Autism Speaks? I'm curious to see if I missed some giant sticky somewhere.

On the contrary, you might want to check out who sponsors Autism Talk TV.

those are google ads, www.wrongplanet.net does not control what google places there. Unless you're looking at something else? If so, links, I'm curious.

Hi Whitetiger, good to hear from you again. I have always trusted your posts. Thanks for the information---I have bought from them in the past, but won't now.

Possibly...

and because I am open-minded... and because I THINK our fearless leader still is as well, I continue to come here occasionally...

However... why the friendly, non-challenging chat with Geraldine Dawson, et al:
http://www.wrongplanet.net/article387.html

And the reciprocation in the form of promotion?: http://blog.autismspeaks.org/2011/04/06 ... onference/

They are nice to me too, but we are not an epidemic and we are not a disease. Autism is not a parent's tragedy that needs to be eliminated; it is a merely a tough road for a child that should be made easier through better understanding.

None of what you linked shows sponsorship.

It does however acknowledge that Autism Speaks is the Giant in the conversation. You can't really ignore them, even if you disagree with what they do. They're just too loud.

www.wrongplanet.net the organization seems to be trying to stay objective about them. I've seen WP report negatively about AS, I've also seen them report the good things they do. Like when they toned down the rhetoric after a backlash from the community. I've yet to see them devolve into the Glen-Beck type extreme retoric that you often see when dealing with emotionally charged issues.

The community itself however, as you can tell from the comments above, harbors all sorts of emotionally charged opinions, and makes them known loud and clear on these forums and elsewere, the majority of which seem to be negative.

Agreed, to a certain extent. No one is being censored here that I am aware of, and I found no evidence of direct sponsorship, but I will never trust Autism Speaks. And I also tend to lose trust in people who are too close to them.

Someday soon, perhaps, the division will end, but so far, they have not taken enough steps toward a pro-self-advocacy position for me support them. They are spending too much energy playing on the emotions of frustrated parents instead of spending it on improving the lives of the children. Of course, it's not the children who have the cash.

I distrust AS as well, but I am exceedingly pleased with how WP (the organization) is handling it.. They've provided us a forum to share information and debate. They aren't censoring anyone, but aren't supporting anyone either. They give us information, but don't indulge in propaganda tactics. Frankly I'm very pleased with them. I hope they stay this course.

That may be so. However, as for as for Autism Speaks sponsoring Autism Talk TV, Alex has admitted to that and you can see their puzzle piece logo at the end of every Autism Talk TV episode, naming them as underwriters. I will post my opinions about Autism Speaks on WP regardless of that though.

Hm. Used them in the past and they outright refused to send out what I had ordered. So bollocks to them.

Won't order from them again.
