Ari Ne’eman is the American autism rights activist who founded the Autistic Self Advocacy Network (ASAN), a non-profit organisation run by and for autistic people.
In December, 2009 Ari was appointed by President Barack Obama to the National Council on Disability an advisory board within the United States Department of Education to guarantee equal opportunity for people with disabilities.
On June 22, last year the United States Senate unanimously confirmed President Obama’s appointment.
Ari has a diagnosis of Asperger syndrome making him the first autistic person to serve on the Council.
ASAN seeks to advance the principles of the disability rights movement with regard to autism and to organize the community of Autistic adults and youth to have our voices heard in the national conversation about us.
ASAN believes that the goal of autism advocacy should be a world in which Autistic people enjoy the same access, rights, and opportunities as all other citizens.
ASAN hopes to empower Autistic people across the world to take control of our own lives and the future of our common community
ASAN's supporters include Autistic adults and youth, pan-disability advocates, and non-autistic family members and professionals.
ASAN provides support and services to individuals on the autism spectrum while working to educate communities and improve public perceptions of autism.
Activities include public policy advocacy, community engagement to encourage inclusion and respect for neurodiversity, quality of life oriented research, and the development of Autistic cultural activities.
ASAN provides information about autism to the public through the Autism NOW National Resource and Information Centre and currently have several other active projects.
