Not one, but two, EHS students up for Ontario Junior Citizens Awards
by Rosalind Russell, Jan. 19, 2012.

‘ . . . The EHS student was nominated by teacher John Diebel.

‘I have had the pleasure of teaching Blake for the past four school years. When Blake entered Grade 9, he was faced with the many challenges all students face when transitioning from elementary to secondary school," explained Diebel. "For Blake, these challenges were magnified to a great extent due to him falling on the ASD spectrum as a young man diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome. Blake had his struggles, but he consistently picked himself up, worked well with those in place to guide hi and developed and practiced self-advocacy skills."

‘Diebel is especially proud that Priddle has become more engaged in school activities becoming a leader and role model to his peers, especially when it comes to journalism.

‘"Blake has explored the world of journalism as an extra-curricular activity at Espanola High Spartan Youth Radio and as a co-operative education student working at the local radio station, Moose FM 99.3. During his short time, he has interviewed such notables as Les Stroud, Stuart Mclean and Crystal Shawanda. He has taken those skills and shared them with younger children who also have Asperger Syndrome."

'He takes that one step further as a participant in Autism Espanola and assists with the annual Autism Candle Light Awareness Vigil. He also mentors Asperger youth sharing stories, strategies, support, and serves as a role model. . . ’

This is the kind of activism and matter-of-fact social acceptance I want to help get going in my United States! :D

Yes, it is.

And I like how easily it's accepted that he's on the spectrum.

And it also shows what people, both on the spectrum and not, can accomplish with just a little bit of positive coaching.
