Petition: Stop electric shocks on special needs kids
Judge Rotenberg Educational Center, a special needs school in Massachusetts, is using electric shocks as a means of punishment. Be warned that the embedded video is distressing.

Signed. Here's what I wrote in the reason column:
Signed. Reason: "With all due respect to whatever ethical impairment or disability these individuals may be facing, torturing children is evidence of a serious disorder. The individuals responsible should be barred from interaction with children and other vulnerable persons, and forcibly (since they are a proven harm to others) placed under psychiatric care."

And where exactly would they get training to use electroshocks for correcting minor infractions of the rules? It's not exactly mainstream practice here. Not even for when electroshock used to be reputable.
I should have been more clear though, and focused on whoever decided this deviation was good policy. It's not really the employees to blame for that.

I understand you aren't defending it and I see your point with respect to the employees.
But I still feel the same about the administration. They made a choice to strongly deviate from normal practices. Why?

Not trying to defend the actions of individual but
one, since these are the policies of the institution it really should be shut down, not restaffed
two, the way professionals are educated about asd is severely lacking
replace the individuals in these systems with out overhauling them won't make anything better

Perhaps it should be shut down and reopened as a museum of mental health practices... Let people can come and see what these kids went through. That's one way we could educate parents, professionals, and the general public. (They really should have done this at Williowbrook.)
Look at the abuse in old age homes. The residents there aren't violent. Any institution you have that takes care of the vulnerable, there seems to be abuse. It's a common theme they all share. I suspect that just as pedophiles are attracted to institutions that deal with young people, so people with other sorts of problems are attracted to other settings where they are given control of other vulnerable persons.
This is not an established method of dealing with violent children. Massachussetts is not the only place in the world where there are institutions set up to deal with this particular demographic, and as far as I know, none of them use this particular method of discipline. It is suspicious.

I can't beleive they have not prosecuted these savages yet, after all the irreversible brutality they caused has been exposed for years. Hearing about these things almost makes me wish this entire world would be obliterated. It is worth questioning whether all the kids admitted in these "homes" are disturbed or impaired. Maybe there are not enough regulations to determine whether the child displays dangerous behaviors or whether the parents want to use psychiatry as a method of abuse.
Here is the most depressing and unsettling story I have read on the disgusting treatment of children and others committed by psychiatrists for my psychology class > http://www.guardian.co.uk/science/2008/ ... calscience
Even today, such barbarity is still occassionally heard of because, as we could imagine, the just complaints of patients with psychological/neurological difficulties about cruel treatment are dismissed as paranoia and lies. Shock treatment should also be criminally punished and remembered for the torture it is. The effects of this evil are so damaging to the brain that it is only performed on the nondominant side - because those who are reckless enough to perform this procedure know what it causes. < To think anyone would be sadistic enough to inflict this on those who are still neurologically developing.
