The fact that some people want us cured depresses me. "Cured" of what? Honestly, many NT's seem to revolve their lives around lies, and being fake. Oh, and popularity. I've never really known an aspie who lie and manipulated others in order to be popular. NT's do that all the time. They fake to be "cool" and they bully people just for being different. It seems like they're the ones who need to be cured..
...ok not all NT's are like this, but more often than not.

But if they really wanted US to be happy, shouldn't they at least let us have a say on how they treat us or whether they cure us or not or whatever? Instead of treating us like we're not even human, but instead, some kind of parasitic monster? I do admit though that it might be hard to listen to autistics on the opposite side of the spectrum, considering some of them are non-verbal and what not.

As Pileo stated, it is a huge spectrum. My co-worker used to work with autistic teens who were barley capable of communication and not only crapped in diapers, they would actually take them off and try to pull the s**t out of their ass, literally.
Now that's def a more extreme example, but for a lot of pro-cure people it's the ability to be able to get out and be social, make friends, have relationships, mingle at work, and be happy.
Some people will say those are personality issues, or anxiety disorders unrelated to AS, but I don't believe that for a second.
Maybe you are doing ok and have overcome the issues AS presents, or maybe you are happy in whatever situation you are in. Many though, are not. Look at the other forums on this site, you'll see the dark side of aspergers, and a lot of issues a cure or advances in therapy could do a lot of good for.
No one can force you to accept any medical procedure you don't wish to endure.
i personaly always wanted to be cured but i never liked to say that out of respect for those who dont.
no one ever likes my posts anyway so why not just say what i think.
i also find many of the curebees to be completely self rightious and full of crap as they desperatley believe in there dreams they really represent the most disabled of autistics.
as far as autistic and other disability related abortion,i dont think that matters because probably its wrong to abort anyone.
my mother was irish catholic from massachusetts and also was adopted and was actualy born in prison.from what i have been told my biological grandparents were part of the irish mafia.
as my mother mother always said,if abortion had been legal in the 40's niether one of us would be here

I don't see anybody going around trying to force a cure us, do you?

"Force" might not be the right word, but yes. Autism Speaks is a huge pro-cure organization who despite their name has no autistic person in it.
I'm sure some of you do want to be cured, and you may have good reasons for that. I'm sorry if my post sounded disrespectful towards you. But personally, I don't think there's anything to be cured of, really.
Asperger's does definitely come with it's issues. It's hard for us (or at least me) to act "socially acceptable" and that may turn people away from us. We may get depressed or develop anxiety because of loneliness or something. I think life may even be more challenging for us - definitely socially but maybe in other ways - than it is for NT's. Still, Asperger's isn't all bad. I would be a completely different person today if I didn't have it and although I am far from perfect, I don't completely hate myself either. There are ways to cope without "curing", you know.

Well, it's not up to you to decide that everyone else should have to cope without curing, if curing were ever possible. It's certainly up to you to decide that for yourself and for any underage child you may have if they were on the spectrum, but just as you are against someone making a decision to cure you against your will, you have no right to make a decision to deprive someone of a cure against their will (if there ever was on).
In other words, why don't you protest the idea of forcing cures on people who don't want them rather than the idea of developing a cure that some may way? Obviously no one wants something forced on them that they don't want. That's a bad thing. So is pushing your agenda so far that you deprive someone who desires it, the opportunity for a cure. Doing one is just as bad as the other, even though only one of them personally offends you.

Some people on the spectrum are closer to the NT side and can learn skills to cope and function in society.
Some people "accept" the stereotypes of AS and decide that they are happy to be alone and single.
But there are a lot of people who are far enough on the spectrum that they may not have the ability to adapt and cope.
I"m glad your ok with things, but a lot of people aren't and they want a cure. You don't have the right to force them to endure AS just because you've adapted successfully.

It's not that I'm against NT's developing a cure for autistic people that actually choose to be cured. But I'm against them thinking all autistic people need to be cured. Some of them act as if we're just a strange type of evil alien creature invading their happy little land....or something. Did you ever see that video put out by Autism Speaks "I am Autism"? That's the kind of thing I'm against.
Also, I apologize if my first post sounded overly angry. I don't hate all NT's. If that was the case, I would hate like 99% of the population (really I just hate 98%*). But it just bothers me how so many of them hate us just for existing. The whole cure issue isn't the only thing I'm talking about - at least some pro-cure people actually think it will "help". Some of them call us "ret*ds" and make fun of people like us when we did nothing wrong to them.
* just joking.

I'm going to ignore your abortion comments for now because that's a whole separate issue, but I respect your wants/needs regarding being cured. You must have had a hard time living with autism, and I can understand that. I have too but most my difficulties stem more from how people treat me with my autism than the actual autism itself. As long as you're not angry at autistic people who do not want to be cured, I'm not going to be angry at you for wanting the opposite.

There are not any organizations that aim to bio-medically cure all people on the spectrum with one cure. If you've heard that Autism Speaks aims to do that it is an internet myth. Autism Speaks recognizes that some on the spectrum accept their conditions, and are asking for nothing more than accommodations in life. For those people on the spectrum Autism Speaks goal is to assist in providing greater acceptance and empowerment.
The organization has already provided details in an interview with an executive from the organization on what they mean by a cure for autism, that is still linked and quoted on this site here:
A: Our organization has four main objectives – to raise awareness of autism, fund research into the causes, better diagnosis and more effective treatments of autism, to advocate for families (for instance – insurance coverage for validated treatments) and to providing resources for families such as the transition toolkit for adolescents who are becoming adults, community grants to expand community services, create housing and much more, as well as information on where to get assistance around the country.
As our mission relates to “cure”, our goal is to reduce suffering associated with autism, in all its forms. Some would call that a cure. Others would call it remediation of disability. For others, it means acceptance and empowerment.
One of the things that is so challenging about autism is the fact that there’s so much variation in the way autism is expressed in people. Some individuals can have a productive and creative life, and they aren’t looking for a cure. They’re interested in being accepted and getting access to services to help them adapt to the world with their special skills. At the other end, there are individuals severely affected who have significant medical conditions, like GI distress and have never spoken. For those individuals, the prospect of a cure for autism is really important because to that person “cure” means being able to communicate and free of pain. That results in a lot of different perspectives of where our priorities should be.

i think that the fact that young people today dont want to be cured shows maybe we are moving in the right direction.when i was young people with A.S or HFA were labled as schizophrenic or juvinille delingquent and they would just lock you up

I worry we are moving in the wrong direction. Are we giving our children the therapies to be productive members of society or are we raising a generation of future SSI dependents?
I work around Autism. I see great success stories and I see train wrecks in the making.
I watched a guy graduate college thanks to years of therapy, but I watched a parent let her 9 year old girl run around a restaurant screaming because "she's autistic and that's who she is"
I think the answer is somewhere between the fantasy of a true cure, and the fantasy of the acceptance only movements.
You don't have the right to force them to endure AS just because you've adapted successfully.
Agreed. Unfortunately I read too many other threads by others who do try to force the aspie-supremacist ideology down our throats. I hope they stay in the minority, otherwise they could effectively force other less fortunate aspies to suffer unnecessarily in the future.
But I'm against them thinking all autistic people need to be cured.
I've never understood why people think that. Some people even think that NTs want to rid the World of aspies because "they're scared of us" (yeah right), and many aspie supremacists seem to think that the attempted treatment of autistic pains, is the same thing as attempting to wipe out the person.
It's funny how many other threads on forums have early comments or reponses like, "no aspie should be treated, there's nothing to 'cure', the NTs are stupid... etc..", and then later in the same thread they backtrack into a compromised argument of "oh well I guess if *some* aspies really really want to be relieved from their anxiety, fears, loneliness, well.... hmmm OK then". Then a few weeks later they start all over again.
Personally I would give an arm and a leg to rid myself of aspie traits and become more NT.
I heard another argument somewhere about earnings...
Many aspies might will earn more money than some carefully-selected dumwit NTs like Beavis and Butthead, as reason to say "don't say that it is *me* (the aspie) that needs to be cured" etc.. ;
the argument could go the other way, say if the same aspie person were to be relieved of aspie shortcomings then they could probably be a more senior director and earn millions, if only it wasn't for their lack of social skills, anxiety, need for routine etc..
So back to the opening line of the thread, "The fact that some people want us cured depresses me".
The results of this poll ...
http://www.wrongplanet.net/postx143823-15-0.html
should challenge that. If 60% of respondents wish they were never born or want to die, then you have to admit, for most of us this is *no way to live*.
