"Today is Autistics Speaking Day, developed in response to an ill-conceived fundraising campaign from 2010 asking people to stop communicating so they could experience being autistic (!). On any day, you get a daily dose of stories about autism-related scientific findings, but how many of these articles include autistic voices? Equally as important, how much autism research focuses on–or even asks–what autistic people themselves, the ultimate consumers of the science, would like to see scientists emphasize?":

Wow, that is actually a decent article. I usually cringe when I see pop-science articles on any topic.

I tend to agree with the list - I think #1 ought to be that this is not a social disorder and will not change from just doing more and trying harder.

I feel the researchers don't seem to think about economic on people already with autism and them finding a job and how employers seem to get traits that just seem to think we are just a bunch of social skills.

For the scientists to leave our genes and chromosoms alone so that the money could go towards programmes that will actually help us to find jobs by educating the general public about the positives of autism in the workplace and how to make it work. The money can also go towards workshops that teach such things to the employers and managers of various job sites. You wouldn't usually stick an Aspie in a crowded, noisy fast food kitchen and you wouldn't usually leave an NT stranded in a quiet room by them self. That's what I mean by making it work.

That sounds more like a way to experience Selective Mutism than a way to experience Autism. Even then, it would only be superficially similar to Selective Mutism. Because it's part of an experiment rather than a response to a state of mind, the state of mind of the people involved in the experiment wouldn't be the same as the state of mind of someone who have Selective Mutism, thus they wouldn't be accurately experiencing what it's like to have Selective Mutism. They also wouldn't be able to experience any of the long term affects of Selective Mutism. In order for someone to be able to accurately experience what it's like to have any disorder, they'd need to have that disorder and experience the long term affects of having it.

Is Autism that bad enough as they said it is? If not why put that burden of self-loathing on yourself?

Tsk, that's unfair. It might be self-loathing for you, but not for him.
