These things happen. If you become a well enough respected scientist (as in publish a few good few papers already), then it is possible to slip in some nonsense. It is usually discovered before the next issue of the journal it's published in and removed. This system is incredibly efficient at stopping mistakes, fraud , and quackery. And it normally keeps scientists from publishing crap, because it endangers their livelihood to do so.
In this case though, Dr. Wakerfield gathered a cult movement. He may have been dismissed from the status of credible scientist, but he remains a popular figure.

Of course the majority of anti-vaccine trolls on Facebook are American. Americans just looove anything loaded with paranoia fuel.
Well, I guess I don't have to worry since I actually got all my shots, and it may end up helping human overpopulation. Natures way of "Thinning the herd", as in those with fewer active brain cells.
And also Australians... Australia now has a group of antivaxxers that are growing exponentially and the rate of people refusing vaccines is increasing... bu when you look at all the crap happening there it really isn't much of a surprise.
But unfortunately, the "thinning (of) the herd" will effect you to. As the diseases we can immunize for rage throughout the world, it will create an environment better suited for other diseases to infect us too. This includes a decrease in hospital beds, which is something that really is already a problem in many places.
Not only that, but the amounts of anibiotics used in trying to heal them will increase the rate of evolution for resistant strains of bacteria, which is another very serious problem...
