AUTISTICADVOCACY.ORG: "ASAN Statement On Dr. Phil Episode Featuring K. Stapleton" (September 19, 2014)

The Autistic Self Advocacy Network issued a statement on Friday, September 19th, condemning Dr. Phil for recent segments featuring Kelli Stapleton.

Stapleton is currently standing trial and has pled guilty to the charge of first-degree child abuse for the attempted murder of her autistic daughter, Issy Stapleton, age 14. The Dr. Phil segments are consistent with the broader media coverage in the year since the attempted murder; rather than rallying with sympathy and support for a child victim of attempted filicide, there have been near-constant attempts to excuse and justify her murderer and paint the person who tried to kill her?her own mother?as the ?real? victim. But this abhorrent and retraumatizing brand of violence found a new voice and a new vigor on Dr. Phil....

From what I'm reading, this is almost a case of the mother wanting to end her daughters "suffering".

Cases like this make me sad, when the child could be in a loving home who accepts them for who they are and helps them, instead of hurting them

Excerpts from the Dr. Phil interview. Kelli says she is "not worthy" to beg forgiveness:

Kelli prefers prison to "the jail of autism":

Kelli had "lost hope", wanted to go to heaven with Issy, now regrets her actions:

It's clear to me that Kelli is a very mentally sick woman.

The worst thing here is that Dr. Phil wants to try and get the daughter reunited with the person that tried to murder her.

Does anybody know how the audience reacted?

*silence* and the show ended as normal, people clapping or the song going as the credits roll. He even started a fund for Issy and her family to help her get treatment for her aggressive behavior.
