Rather than gripe about a portrayal of Aspies in the media, I'd like to thank Chuck Lorre for Sheldon.
I know some claim that Sheldon's character doesn't have Asperger's, but Chuck and Bill clearly know what it is and simply have chosen not to have Sheldon's character diagnosed in the show.

"We chose not to diagnose Sheldon," says "Big Bang" co-creator Chuck Lorre.
"Big Bang" co-creator, Bill Prady, who based Sheldon on computer programmers he used to work with, has said they were afraid that if they labeled Sheldon an Aspie, they would have too much responsibility to depict the condition accurately within a sitcom.

I think Chuck and Bill do a great job of showing how Aspies might be annoying, but they are also endearing, honest, and harmless.

The only thing I thank Chuck Lorre for is composing the theme songs to 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' and 'Toxic Crusaders'. Outside of that, I think of nothing positive he's brought to the entertainment industry.

My problem is they make him the joke of the series, and not portrayed as a more serious character.

He's more logical and grounded than the rest of the characters in all honesty, so I don't get why he's the brunt of the joke for everything.

I agree. It's really about mocking the symptoms. hahaha he doesn't understand sarcasm. hahaha he's asexual.

I'd gove them more credit if they were honest about it instead of denying he's modeled after AS symptoms and stereotypes (much more of the latter).

I think neither of you are being objective. Sheldon is by no means *the* joke of the series. Penny is mocked as a dumb promiscuous blond. Leonard is mocked as a spineless pushover. Wolowitz is mocked as sex-obsessed creepy little man...

No, it's the fact that the other characters have evolved over time and Sheldon hasn't. He is still the same character he was in the first episode. People on the spectrum do change over time, it's been known to happen (I'm an example myself)

While BBT is not one of my favorite programmes, it does occasionally have flashes of brilliance (imho).

Sounds like confirmation bias, as you are looking for evidence to support your conclusion, rather than looking at the evidence, doing a rational analysis, and then coming to a conclusion.

I see far more change in Sheldon's character than Leonard. Leonard is still an insecure door mat. At the start of the show Sheldon had no interest in women, but now he's in a long-term relationship with Amy. At the start of the show Sheldon didn't get sarcasm, but now can sometimes use it to make his own jokes. At the start of the show Sheldon was emotionally detached, and now has acknowledged his attachment to Amy and has told Leonard that he's his best friend.

Other than being able to talk to women, there seems to be little change in Raj's character.

And other than a painfully slow acceptance of a long-term relationship with Leonard, not much has changed with Penny. Letting go of her actress fantasy is another small improvement, but she's still controlling and selfish, and in some ways even more than she was early on in the show.

BBT is only a sitcom, folks! The producers have found a formula that works, and are not about to change it in favor of more "evolved" characters. What works, works for a reason, and it usually has something to do with money.

^That's what I do.

I think the show is incredibly sexist too with the attractive women are unintelligent stereotype.

I'm not saying autism is a subject that should be off limits for socially acceptable comedy. I think these are hillarious. http://www.theonion.com/search/?q=micha ... t=relevant

I think you are just looking for negatives. I already refuted your comment about Sheldon.
Bernadette's character is attractive in the show and certainly not portrayed as unintelligent.

Actually... All the women on the show ARE caricatures of female personality types.

Penny - gorgeous, dumber than a bucket
Amy - socially awkward, really intelligent, nerdy as hell
Bernadette - tiny, cute, MEAN AS HELL.

They have all been reduced to tropes... Of course, so have all the men...

Quote from the show: "Oh it's not a death ray, just a little sonic blast to scare him off. Believe me if I had a death ray I wouldn't be living here, I'd be living in my lair, funded by the people's of earth for not using my death ray."
I don't think sheldon portrays aspies as harmless.

Then I don't think you get sarcasm.
