Seattle Protest organised for this month (26th)
Details as follows, copied and pasted from ASAN's Facebook page, with information on how to join this protest action:
"The Autistic Self Advocacy Network of Washington State will be leading a protest against the Autism Speaks fundraising walk at Seattle Center on Saturday, September 26th.
Our reasons for opposing their organization are many -- the complete absence of Autistic individuals in the organization's leadership, the exorbitant salaries of their top executives, their misguided research priorities that emphasize preventing future Autistic births over finding better ways to support existing Autistic people, and the dramatic, stigma-inducing scare tactics used in their advertising.
Please join us at 9 a.m. on Saturday, September 6th at the Seattle Center, to send the message that Autism Speaks must no longer be allowed to dominate the national conversation about autism with pity-driven, tragedy-based narratives that stigmatize Autistic individuals and put our dignity, safety, and often our lives in very real danger. It's time to change the conversation about autism, and center the priorities of Autistic individuals ourselves when creating programs, policies, and services that are targeted at us.
Nothing About Us, Without Us!
For more information about this protest and about our opposition to Autism Speaks, please see the following article: http://asan-wa.tumblr.com/post/97844633 ... d-boycotts" (End of pasted material)
Wish I could be there. Rather too far for me to travel these days, so will attend in spirit only, so to speak..
I am assuming the Seattle Centre is in Seattle (?) - correct me if I am wrong...
It is time to change the conversation about autism.
It is time that autistic people as a group took control of narrative.
Taking control of the dominant narrative will be a "coming of age" event, a huge leap forward.
I don't think I will live long enough to see it.
Prove me wrong on that and it will be the most wonderful surprise and gift..

I too will be there in spirit because I simply cannot afford to get there right now.
I'm in the process of starting a South West Ohio chapter of ASAN so that we may start doing things like this as well.

Oh, I wish I could go, but I'm in Montreal! I should organize one in Montreal, but half the people speak French. I've been trying to learn French since I was 5 and still am no good at it. Well, what I can do is get some English Montrealers, just a few, and go protest in both languages (surely some of my fellow protesters will be French or bilingual) at Autism Speaks's Montreal site. I think there's one downtown but not sure. Anyone interested, PM me.
