An electric shock therapy stops self-harm among the autistic, but at what cost? - Reprinted by the National Post

FDA what is taking you so long?. If this aversive technique were used on the prisoners at GITMO to make them not terrorists there would be worldwide protests. There would be angry editorials, OP ed pieces in the Washington Post and most everywhere, decrying the torture. Their claims that the shocks were mild and only used in extreme circumstances would not be believed. Yet when done to autistic childeren the practice gets a largely sympathetic article in the Washington Post with the defenders of this practice getting a lot more space then its critics. It has been three decades since disability advocates first started to try close down this prison, so far without success.
As an autistic person myself this double standard tells me what society really thinks of us, despite all the talk of diversity and and politicaly correct language like "differently abled". No Social Justice Warriors demanding safe spaces for these kids.
