Since revealing I have Asperger syndrome last year, the public reaction has been almost entirely positive. Lots of people have said: “Thank you for being honest because now we feel we can talk about it.” But there’s a small section of society whose ideas about mental health are rooted in the past. An MP called me a nutjob [MP Nicholas Soames retweeted a post by a hunting supplier that called Chris a ‘self-confessed nutjob’] and I just thought: ‘Grow up.’ And that was during Mental Health Awareness Week. For my parents’ generation, mental health was a complete taboo. Times are changing and if I can be a very small part of that change, where we bring these subjects out of the shadows, that’s a positive thing.

It doesn’t worry me when people demand I’m sacked. I work very closely with the BBC to make sure I don’t transgress any agreements we have – I’m diligent about those sorts of things, that’s the nature of Asperger’s. The world is black and white for me so if something’s wrong, I don’t do it. It’s that simple.
