But what is a BTBR mouse? What does that mean? What makes the BTBR mouse different from "regular" mouses?

Its a simple question really, what is a BTBR mouse?

BTBR is a genetic strain generated by inbreeding mice to strengthen genetic traits.
Many, many different genetic strains of mice are bread so different traits can be studied.
The details of this (BTBR) strain can be found HERE

well, the study is nonsense. So a mouse strain uses 4 "sounds" instead of 10....so what?

This mouse studys dont reveal anything about autism.

1. The mice have a problem with communication.
2. Autism is a problem with communication.
Therefore, the mice are autistic.

The logic works, I guess. It's hard to tell with that news article.
