is it just me?
or does the whole autism speaks cure thing seem like a stolen storyline.
NTs want a cure for autistic people so they won't be inconvenienced by their differences instead of learning to relate. Some autistic people want a cure, motivated by loneliness and pressure from NTs. Most autistic people do not want to be cured, just understood and given a place in society and not relegated to as subhuman. People behind the cure are not autistic but people who "deal with" autistic people (families, parents, etc) and so garner sympathy for a cause motivated by fear... when in reality simply giving birth to an autistic person does not mean you know how they think or feel. And the cure is not curing people with autism but curing the world of autistics.
now substitute NTs with general public and autism with mutant and you have... the plot to Xmen 3.
not that that is surprising since they used the Worthington Labs plotline to place the idea of "cure" via eradication in the spotlight.
Is there a reason why people would rather eliminate differences instead of realizing that the different people don't want to be cured, only treated better. Is it a lack of logic, or the idea that it is "too hard" to have to treat people with AS and autism like people. To maybe put forth a little bit of an effort.
I have spent my whole life trying to figure out what is "wrong with me" only to find out maybe nothing is "wrong with me" that I am just unique. And I am happy that I can join this forum and relate to you, even if I do not have AS and especially if I do (jury is still deliberating) .
And now even though I am the same person, because I am being evaluated with AS people are treating me differently. I need to fake normal, mentally become normal, or leave. Not because there is anything new about me, but only because maybe I will now understand why I am different, and be ok with it. But because I have a "label".
maybe I have more in common with my childhood superheroes than I ever knew.

I told a few people that I am getting evaluated and I get everything from "you look normal" to "why can't you just act normal" to "if you pretend to be normal then after while you will just be normal" to "ZOMG don't touch me" to the only response I liked which was my mom who said "I love you anyway, but I will warn your sister if it comes back positive"
only because me and my sister share very similar genetic problems. And her personality and issues are almost a carbon copy of mine.
You're not the first to make that connection, and it is in some ways valid, but it seems a bit too self-aggrandizing to make ourselves out to be the X-Men.
But then, my nickname among some of my friends at college is Professor X.

Hi Shiggily, you seem to have a good attitude, and I feel you will be OK.
A label is just a label ... something attached ... not part of you. Use it to help explain things to others, don't let it drag you down.
Be honest and open, talk to your sister about it first, that way your mum will have nothing to threaten you with.
And if anyone condemns you for who or how you are, they are not worthy of your time.

not saying aspies are just like Xmen. Just saying the struggle to belong, the isolation and feelings of different-ness, in some cases a dual personality/hiding of the real personality, and being "advocated" by people who do not hold your personal interests in mind... all of these things draw parallels.

This is why I love x-men so much, the comics, cartoons, and movies deals with a lot of what AS people go through. The cure episode in the animated series had Rouge say a quote I agree strongly with "You can't cure who you are"

Damn straight! That's what I've been saying from day 1. I just hope that it doesn't end up like the Code Geass plot, with Autism Speaks as the Britannians and us as the Elevens (Japanese). Though I would get an excuse to blow a few peoples heads off with a knightmare frame...
