I have always been a big fan of Leary's for his refusal to accept conventionally held opinions at face value. But I always felt that it represented a kind of "i don't care what you tell me it is, i am going to form my own opinion based on my own first-hand impression" approach. Obviously he has gotten zero first-hand information in this case. He's just spouting off as though he knows something about a situation he's never actually been party to.

I guess he should stick to s**t he knows, like alcohol, infidelity and a childish obsession with penis size.

Sorry, I'm just really disappointed today.

f**k Leary - his entire "career" is based on the fact that Bill Hicks died and he was able to rip off almost his entire act. If he wants something to pick on maybe it should be living a life in the shadow of a dead giant.

Denis Leary is only famous because there is no cure for cancer.

What do you expect from a guy who proclaims he's an as*hole, big shock there. Maybe boycotting, his show, or heckling his standup act would get some attention.

Ok, so let me get this straight. He says,

Quote:
"There is a huge boom in autism right now because inattentive mothers and competitive dads want an explanation for why their dumb-ass kids can't compete academically, so they throw money into the happy laps of shrinks . . . to get back diagnoses that help explain away the deficiencies of their junior morons. I don't give a [bleep] what these crackerjack whack jobs tell you - yer kid is NOT autistic. He's just stupid. Or lazy. Or both."

Looks to me like he believes that that is all there is to autism. Given that, he must not have done his homework, which shows how lazy he is. Not seeing how lazy he is, shows how stupid he is. Quoting him again,
Quote:
yer kid is NOT autistic. He's just stupid. Or lazy. Or both.
,
I think we can all agree, although with a lot of sadness and embarrassment, that he therefore must be autistic. Based on his assessment, of course.

Nah, he wants that attention. He even said he hoped Jenny McCarthy protested him because the controversy would be good for his sales. If THAT doesn't tell you how little he knows about autism, that he thinks Jenny McCarthy is a spokesperson of note, then I don't know what could possibly make it clear.

I think that is what upset me so much. It's one thing to be a deliberate a--hole about things where you have a strong opinion. But if you know NOTHING about a topic, how can you have a strong opinion? I keep thinking if he had a family member affected by ASD he would be as vocal for autism rights as he is about firemen's rights. Maybe if he had even met someone on the spectrum.

(And the show is actually really good. I'm kind of addicted to it...)

He makes the bad assumption that people with autistic traits aren't doing well academically. One can do well in school and still be gifted and deficient in ways that are difficult to see.

The doctors look for specific things, and they would filter out any lazy, dumb NTs.

I defend my PhD tomorrow. I have never been obese, nor lazy. But I am still a bit loud when feeling overwhelmed. What would he say to that?

The show is crap. It used to be pretty good but it devolved into turning most of the character storylines into PG-13 versions of pornos. Fat firefighter gets nymphomaniac nun, etc.

I don't have TV, so I am a season behind watching on Netflix.

I'm strangely unoffended.

Now if he was an anti-vaccine curbie, I might be.

LOL, autistics are stupid and lazy.

No one has ever referred to me as stupid, at least not in earnest. Lazy, maybe. But not stupid.

Dennis Leary has indeed ripped of Bill Hick's entire act and thus doesn't deserve any attention, in my opinion.

I have Denis Leary's autograph. I only have it because he's famous.

Dear Denis Leary,
I work hard every day in my classes and homework here at Hollins University. I do all this to make sure I have the minimum required GPA that is required of me to keep my scholarship. I even managed to pull a 4.0 last semester. And all without an IEP. I am also an RA for a wonderful hall of freshman girls.
And guess what. I HAVE AUTISM!
So you can kiss my ass f****r!

I'd have to read more of his book. Because the way I read that, it sounded like he's not saying Autism doesn't exist, but that all these bad parents who are raising dumb kids want to blame something for their failure, so they pick Autism as an excuse.

It's like parents who blamed their kids' bad behaviour on ADD/ADHD when in fact, they had done nothing to correct their child and had basically ignored their brats horrendous behaviour until somebody called the cops.

Some people are actually Autistic and some actually have ADD/ADHD, but a large number of families are using these conditions as an excuse for not doing any hard work when it comes to raising their kids.

Leary doesn't say "Autism doesn't exist" or "there's no such thing..." He says, "[your] kid is not autistic." Directing the comment at parents explaining away their kids lack of achievement on a medical condition they don't have.

(/Devil's Advocate)

Again, I could be wrong. And with all this attention over the statement, I'm guessing that Leary will now milk it by saying "er, yeah. I meant to say that Autism doesn't exist!" Just to increase sales of his book.
