If you do not know already, the 2012
Summer Games will be in London.

But if you had the power to give the 2016
Summer Games to any city that has not hosted,
which city would it be?

The four finalists were annouced back in June.

I made up this list yesterday just for the heck of it.

North America: Chicago, Boston, San Francisco, Dallas, San Antonio, Houston, St. Louis, Kansas City, Kansas City, Minneapolis, Milwaukee, Detroit, Cincinnati, Seattle, Raleigh, Atlanta, Miami, Mexico City, New York City

South America: Santiago, Lima, Montevideo, Brasilia, Caracas, Bogotá, Rio-de-Janiero,
Asuncion, Buenos Aires, Sao Paulo, Quito

Europe: Madrid, Granada, Edinburgh, Dublin, Lisbon, Vienna, Brussels, Prague, Copenhagen, Budapest, Amsterdam, Warsaw, Glasgow, Stockholm, Oslo, St. Petersburg, Helsinki, Moscow

Africa: Cairo, Nairobi, Cape Town, Johannesburg, Addis Ababa, Gaborone, Pretoria, Rabat

Asia: Seoul, Sapporo, Ho Chi Minh City, Shanghai, Hanoi, Bangkok,
Taipei, Singapore City, New Delhi, Istanbul

Oceania: Melbourne, Perth, Auckland, San Juan, Honolulu, Brisbane, Hobart

What say you, fellow Aspies? :P

Washington, D.C. wouldn't not be on the list due to different factors.

Atlanta and Sydney both already host them once 1996 and 2000

Moscow also hosted it back in the 1980's (Basically U.S. boycott it in return Russia boycott the 1980 Winter Olympics over the invasion of Afghanistan by Russia)

L.A. did as well. So you have cities on your list that already hosted the Summer Olympics once.

South America and Africa have never hosted an Olympics.

Tokyo all the way maybe then could kill two birds with one stone. See Japan a life long dream of mine and go to the Olympic games.

melbourne had it in 1956. It was the first time where they had the atheletes come out in one big group instead of in their national teams at the closing ceremony. apparently a chinese teen wrote to the organisers and suggested it. they adopted the idea and it went from there.

i heard something about brisbane having a bid for a games, but i heard back in 06 saying that it would be at least 20 years before the games were hosted by someone in this area. but i think brissie should have a bid anyways.

I would like to see Rio have a go at hosting.

Mexico City also hosted the Summer Olympics, I think it was sometime in the 60's. I became a fan of the Olympics since LA hosted them in 84, and at one time they were my special interest.

For the US, I'd have to go with Seattle or San Francisco. San Francisco is too small, I think, but would be nice - Seattle has the potential for a good bid.

For Europe, Dublin would be my pick - Ireland is growing fast and is ready for something like that. Second choice is Budapest.

It would be very interesting to have olympics in India, but I don't see it happening anytime soon at all. I don't see it happening in south america anytime soon either - but Rio has the best chance by far for that region. Ditto africa - it requires far too much investment on the part of the hosting country.

Tokyo itself hosted once as well back in 1964 so very far back for them and they hosted back in 1990's for the Winter Olympics.

Looking at the four finalists that are the choices is more likely between Tokyo and Chicago due economy based factors. Tokyo being the Video Game Mecca of the world along with other technology stuff. Chicago might get because their GMP in 2007 was $442 billions because their economy has different parts of the economy.

Raising the money is a huge factor here in being able to host the 31st Olympiad. Its going to be interesting to see who gets 2016.

Mexico City hosted the 1968 Olympics.

I voted for Rio de Janiero.

Brazil takes their sports industry very seriously.

But if another South American city had to host,
it all comes down to the amount of space the host city has.
Also, it has to be a host city where the people
are comfortable with the idea of hosting an Olympics
and where the athletes will feel safe.
Such cities include Santiago, Lima, Quito, and Buenos Aires.

I hope Brisbane gets to host it somewhere between 2020-2028. I was 18 when the Sydney olympics were on and did not interest me one bit. I regret that and hope that Australia gets to host the olympics again during my lifetime. (probably never Sydney)

For North America you missed all the Canadian cites, Edmonton for one, has hosted several very successful games,
the Commonwealth Games in 1978, the Universiade games in 1983, 2001 World Championships in Athletics, and
the 2005 World Master Games. Edmonton has also held the hosted the 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup, its
a city use to having large sporting events, unlike some cities.

Who in their right minds would suggest Houston as an Olympic city? (native Houstonian here)

It's either hot and humid, or it's pouring down rain, and God forbid there be a tropical storm/hurricane.

At the moment Tokyo has the most votes but Chicago could get in an upset.
