Qigong (Chi enhancement in martial arts)- Possible?

Your approach is the best way to look at it. Even though I've looked at the videos and some relating research I'd be silly to claim each individual one to absolutely true. I think there is truth to them and that there are things we have not learnt to quantify, but as you said it is hard to say for certain.


One assertion from the video I found matched my experience: We only see what we expect to see. When out hiking, I have often gone a long time without seeing a particular type of flower, for example. When this type of flower is pointed out to me, I suddenly saw quite a few, and continued to see them after that.

I like the concept of seeking a balance that Buddhism encourages. I read the Buddha Vacana a bit. Studying Buddhism may be one way of being an atheist without becoming too cynical and bitter, as some atheists seem to be.

The terminology gets fuzzy. When I call myself an agnostic, I mean I do not believe in a god, but I do not rule out the possibility. If God exists, I do not believe it is a sentient being, but instead, possibly would be defined as the principles that reality is ruled by. I think I read that Schopenhauer defined "God" in a similar way. When Einstein referred to "God" I think he was thinking along these lines.


I believe in no god but believe that if there is a being that is omnipresent they would not require us to worship them. Being omnipresent, the most ideal thing for them should surely be for living beings to retain a sense of inner peace.

It is possible, but not at all conclusive in any way that these Radio Waves are the same energy that we are becoming more in touch with through spiritual practices. It could be something different though.

To sum it up the benefits of Chi. There are physical benefits which are produced through exercise, and more physical benefits on our minds and bodies by letting ourselves become attuned.


I like the fact that you included a link to an article about water crystals which concluded that Dr. Emoto's work is "pseudoscience for the masses." It is good to keep a healthy skepticism about such claims. The article advocates more scientific double blind tests to test Dr. Emoto's theories, especially since (according to the article) Dr. Emoto didn't follow these standard procedures himself. To paraphrase Dr. Carl Sagan: One should keep an open mind, but not to such an extent that one's brains fall out.

I just finished watching the video about Thai Chi that Patrick posted the link to. I found it interesting and worth viewing. I suspect many will lose patience for this hour long presentation. I found another version of the same lecture that seems (so far, I only sampled it) to be more fast paced. This happens about 40 minutes into his video. Dr. Lam does answer a question about Qigong that his version of Thai Chi uses it to accomplish what it does. Specifically, among other things, health benefits and mood enhancement.

His work is certainly interesting, and food for thought. Years ago, before man learned about the full electro-magnetic spectrum, everyone assumed that what we saw was the only reality.

I think there is much we still have to learn and if we are to ever fully understand these types of "lifeforces" energies or whatever people like to call them we may need to do a lot more investigating.

Thanks for the feedback. I don't think so. I have had episodes (both pleasant and unpleasant) that included adrenaline, but the feeling was very different. These episodes included car accidents and thrill sports such as sport parachuting.

It was exciting after I experienced the chills, etc. but in a different way. It was more about the intellectual puzzle to understand what just happened.

My teacher teaches Qigong and Tai Chi hand in hand, we've historically done Qigong as a warm up. Its good for toning, circulation, and breathing,, particularly when we've taken something like a five or seven pound weight and held that out far in our exercises.
