Our family's approach to good health
While we are not even close to being in great shape, we try hard. There are four of us...and all of us have HFA to different degrees. Living in Idaho and close to the mountains, we live close to the Earth. All my life, I have been a hunter and fisherman. I grew up learning to live off the land here and there and it stuck to the point that it is my passion.
We cross country ski and snowshoe through the winter and do day hikes during the summer. I carry a fly rod with me to test new fly patterns (I've tied flies for over 30 years), and while most fish get released back into the water, some come home as part of a healthy meal which might also consist of veggies from the garden or picked in the wild like asparagus. We also hit local markets and farmers markets in season. My wife makes her own bread from wheat she grinds. Even her cookies contain whole wheat. I call them 'granola bars'. I guess the name fits because we fit the term 'outdoor granola' quite well.
In the fall, I go hunting for red meat to make into jerky or bottled meat to use in the winter. My wife will bottle venison in beef broth and it becomes very tender. She calls it a "french dip in a bottle".
We also pick Service berries, huckleberries and choke cherries in in the wild for jams and syrups. We like the term: "gourmet hunter gathers".
I just bought a new daypack/light over night pack from Osprey. I love it. We are going on a day hike later today. I wont need something so big but I want to get used to it. AS an aspie, many packs really bother me. This one is very nice.
As a note, due to our autism, our family needs natural living for health. We do better by not eating poor food. We limit our eating out and food that that has a lot of preservatives and hormones in it, effect us for the negative.
