I started taking valproate for migraine prophylaxis. The good news is that it appears to be working much better than the last two I've tried. The bad news is:

1) I'm experiencing the odd dizziness, which causes me to occasionally stumble. This isn't so bad. I long ago stopped caring what others thought of my strange physical quirks. Plus, it gives my reflexes practice when I attempt to right myself or stop myself from falling on my face.
2) I'm having major tremors. I tried taking lorazepam, as my doctor gave me that for similar twitches I used to get. I'll have to talk to him about it at my next appointment. The good thing about the tremors is that it's probably the most intense exercise I ever get.

Anyone else have anything to say on this topic?

I have Essential Tremors & I found certain medications make them worse including Lorazepam which makes me jerky. I think Klonopin helps my tremors alittle. You could try Neurontin instead of Valproate. Neurontin is sometimes used for tremors & migraines & there's a more potent version of it called Lyrica. Also some beta blockers are used for migraines & tremors. Perhaps you could take one like Propranolol in addition to your other meds.

Thank you, nick007. I'll keep what you said about the lorazepam in mind. I also have clonazepam, which I have found to be most useful for insomnia. A psychologist I went to recently recommended that I try gabapentin, but I couldn't find any evidence that it is effective for migraines, and my GP agreed, so we tried the valpropate. Don't get me wrong; the tremors are far more preferable than the migraines, just a new experience for me. And incidentally, I am taking the beta blocker bisoprolol, also for migraine prophylaxis.

I get bad shakes, especially in my hands when I go too long without eating, due to a hypoglycemic condition.

I have essential tremor and my neurologist prescribed me Rivotril, which helped but I stopped taking them after two weeks, since it cannot be healed. Im just not ready to have maintenance medications and I just hate medicines.
