Well its not good for anyone...I do hear though that people on the spectrum can be more prone to digestive problems and sensitivities and things like IBS. I personally don't really drink pop too much anymore unless its like organic or small batch real cane sugar kinds I also have taken a liking to the Monster energy drink rehab teas. But yeah the high fructose corn syrup in soda and most energy drinks just feels gross to drink.

I don't really think coca-cola specifically is bad for autistics more so than other people, but maybe we are more prone to being sensitive to stuff like that. As for the caffeine aspect I think that more depends on the autistic individual I personally find it helpful and like beverages with caffeine but I know it can make some people jittery or anxious.

I'm more concerned with the caffeine effect, I assume thats the only thing that makes Coke and cola drinks unique. I know there is a crap load of sugar and acid in all sodas that can affect digestion and blood sugar.

All sodas? I bet I could find one that doesn't....i mean most conventional ones, but there are some weird organic/natural sodas...some will still have sugar though its pure cane sugar but some don't have any sugar.

It is nasty for anyone! Switch to green tea, black tea, homemade smoothies, good old fashioned water, and your
body will thank you! Those sugary, carbonated drinks are no better than poison.

Tea is all well and fine for most people, apparently, but I find that it makes me think too much and then I can't sleep, no matter how many hours passes between my last cup and bedtime.

This. It is carbonated sugar water with carcinogenic caramel colouring added to it. It has no nutritional value whatsoever.

You'd be surprised to learn just how many different kinds of soda contain caffeine. Even some ginger ales do.

And high fructose corn syrup isn't good for anyone.

It doesn't really affect me except by helping me feel alittle more awake.

Another reason why its bad for everyone (particularly those who are clumsy/coordination-challenged/accident prone :) )...
Soft drinks, including Coca Cola are linked with lowered calcium levels in the body due to their high phosphorus content, which reduces the body's ability to absorb calcium.

Bone density continues to increase until roughly age 30, after this point absorption and retention of calcium decreases while calcium losses from the bones increase.
The drainage of calcium from bone occurs in all humans at a steady pace, but women are more at risk for losses (pregnancy, lactation).

Basically before 30 a person should try to build their bone density and absorb as much calcium as possible as a method of reducing the likelihood of breakages due to brittle bones/osteoporosis in later life.
Coca cola/high phosphorus content food &drink reduce the amount of calcium that can be absorbed into the body.

Mexican Coke (not the rocks) is the best Coca Cola!

As for the previous post, I just believe in living when it comes to food and drink. I will accept any and all consequences but I refuse to live a life of denial for the sake of the future.

Amen. But because it's addictive like a drug people live in denial of what you just said. It is easier to label something as harmful if it's not desired. But unfortunately sugar is the new heroin.

Caffeine is a major migraine trigger for me, I've never thought about whether it was related to my having Aspergers tho.

I hardly ever drink soda anymore, as it makes me feel kind of sick afterward. Plus, I've been told that I should eat less sugar (though I haven't really been following up on that  )

Never had any problems drinking as much Coke or other colas as I want unless it's too close to bedtime, in which I seek out caffiene-free carbonated drinks (and not in high volume for obvious reasons). The only colas that otherwise bother me are the diet varieties that contain aspartame, which gives me dull headaches and makes it much harder to concentrate. As long as I stay off stuff containing Equal, Nutrasweet, or any other aspartame content, I can handle as much as I want.

I also totally agree with Factory ten's quote,
"As for the previous post, I just believe in living when it comes to food and drink. I will accept any and all consequences but I refuse to live a life of denial for the sake of the future."

I'm proud to say I've lasted 53 years on nothing but junk food.
After all, it is MY body, not the scientists' or US government's!

Always thought it was something more to do with the aspartame or other sweeteners/chemicals they put in it, I don't have pepsi/coke (diet) as much anymore, more of a dr pepper zero guy myself.

I like coffee and coca cola. But in moderation. Too much caffeine worsens my anxiety. Too much coca cola makes me feel like a saturated beached whale. :c

Coke is very refreshing and soothing for a sore throat.
