Anyone here have an unusual pattern of sleeping? I go to bed fairly early, but I always wake up every 2-3 hours, then go back to sleep. This doesn't tire me out though, unless I wake up about 5 AM and go back to sleep. I always wake up at 6:15.

I tend to wake up every 2 or 3 hours, too. And it doesn't make me tired, either. My sleeping pattern is very irregular. I just sleep whenever I feel like it. So I could be sleeping/awake at any time of the day or night. I do usually try to get many hours' sleep every day as I believe it's essential for good health. And I'm good at sleeping. Even cans of energy drink cannot stop me from sleeping.

I have a similar sleep pattern (about three hours) but I can not fall back to sleep. I wake and my mind just goes off on all sorts of things. I wonder if I will ever be able to get enough sleep.

My sleep schedule is fairly regular. Although I do frequently experience "nightmares".

I'm nocturnal, just like the great owls. So yes, my day time sleeping pattern can be quite irregular and inefficient.

It all depends on what you do when you are awake. Owls get a lot done at night.

I very much agree, I get a lot more done if I let myself fall back into my natural sleep cycle, which pretty much belongs to a vampire. If it were completely up to me and what feels natural I'd gladly go back to staying up until 6-7 am. Unfortunately with the job I have now I have to get up early after not being able to fall asleep until at least 2am. Then on the weekend's I stay up late and crash for 11-13 hours Saturday and Sunday morning to make up for lost sleep.

What is wrong with this? It won't let me post a response!

I finally was able to post the response. It apparently permitted it once I removed the quote!

For a period of about ten years, from 1995 to 2005, I slept about 2 hours per night. I hated it because I was never rested and I had dreams only a couple of times a year.

Anyway, about your sleeping schedule, before the advent of gas lights, people used to go to sleep early. One of the more common patterns of sleep then was what is sometimes referred to as first sleep - second sleep.

Under first sleep, second sleep, one generally wakes up after about three or four hours sleep and then, after an hour or so, goes back to sleep for the rest of the night. For the hour or so they were awake, there were number of different things one might do -- go to the bathroom, eat a snack, think about one's dreams, have sex, read, ... . Some people would apparently sometimes use the opportunity to visit with a neighbor.

I have kind of transitioned into a first sleep, second sleep pattern much of the time, but not always. I rarely sleep more than four hours without waking up for an hour. Of course, with our modern choices, I frequently spend the time on the Internet.

One thing that can help is to not go to bed, or even into the bedroom, until you are ready to go to sleep. Over time that may help you gain a reaction of being ready to go to sleep when you enter the bedroom. I used to have problems going to sleep but now I typically fall asleep within minutes after going into the bedroom to go to sleep.

Sometimes that doesn't work so well. There have been times I went into the bedroom to change shoes or clothes and fell asleep instead.

I sleep during the day and stay up all night. I feel more productive late at night when the sun is down and everyone is sleeping and there are less distractions or expectations that I should be communicating with people. It's also a nice excuse to avoid things. Like oh sorry I missed that I was sleeping then. Or sorry I wont be able to do that with you I sleep during the day.

I wake up like everyday like 5:30 in the morning, almost doesn't matter when I go to sleep.

I guess it's not that unusual but it is for me! :P
