A guy told my wife online yesterday that I may have a folic acid deficiency, because my back pain lasted 48 hours and remained extremely painful and intense that entire time. I could barely walk without shooting back-muscle pain, resulting from extreme stiffness. Worse yet, yesterday the muscle pain did something I thought was impossible -- it SPREAD to other back muscles that weren't in pain before! 8O But I'm better now, thank GOD!

Anyway, I do like salads, I just neglected to buy them for a few months. So I bought some lettuce, cucumber, and tomatoes, and made and ate a salad last night. I also took ibuprofen this morning for a headache I woke up with after a nightmare. But anyway, whether it's the ibuprofen or the folic acid in the salad or both, my back is TOTALLY BACK TO NORMAL!! :D I can't even put into words the difference between the screamingly-sharp, chronic pain I've dealt with for the past 48 hours, and the totally normal way my back feels now. SOMETHING helped -- I don't even have the slightest soreness! And I was practically yelling yesterday in pain. I neglected to take ibuprofen earlier for my back, simply because I've been taking, IMO, too much of the stuff lately for headaches, so I wanted to give my liver a rest from it -- even though that meant gritting my teeth through back pain for 2 days. (That makes me sound braver than I am; I didn't KNOW it would last 2 days without diminishment!)

Salads REALLY help my calorie control. I'm sure that's a lot of great advice, auntblabby, but I have a proven system that clearly works for me, and I'm an Aspie, AND a man, so... I'll not likely change. I may incorporate your advice here and there, though.

Dates, usually. Or no-calorie baking sweetener.

I gain weight easily, both my parents are very overweight as well, and my boyfriend has a family history of diabetes, so I blanch at the idea of making an oily, sugary cake, especially when it's not necessary for taste or consistency.

I'm not fond of normal, "average" salads, meaning some wilted lettuce and maybe a few pitiful slices of cucumber.

However, take me to a salad bar (one of my fave restaurants has one), and load it up with broccoli, tomato, carrots, cauliflower, sunflower seeds, balsamic vinaigrette, black bean and corn salsa, garbanzo beans, etc, and that's just about my favorite meal.

I am must be an anomaly compared to most people since I did not follow any dietary advice from outside sources but was able to shred through the weight like knife through cloth. I made up my own rules and over the few years I started taking command on my diet, I made additions to my diet that I enjoyed, like winter squash, tuna, eggs, berries, sweet potatoes, etc. No more so called what I called "crap" food which I based on taste and nutrition, which is mostly food that has "enriched" wheat flour, junk food, etc. I drank water instead of fruit juice and a lot of it, especially today (I normally drink 14-15 servings of water a day). I also started exercising, which played a huge factor as it increased my metabolism and allowed me to consume more filling food if I did not exercise.

Ever since I can remember, I was always the fat kid at one point weighed over 450+ lbs (the scales limit) around age 19. Then one night, I had enough and my "war" against my fat had begun, which resulted in losing around 250 lbs and currently undergoing surgery to remove the excess skin. Right now I have veins popping through my skin and I can actually see my ribs around my chest, which is a big deal for me.

Many diet plans are not for everyone, especially for stubborn people like me. It may have developed from the past when my parents and random therapists/dieticians barked orders on what I eat without my input. It failed, which resulted in me gaining more weight by not listening to their diet and exercise plan.

I have proven through hard work that I am capable of taking care of myself now and into the future regarding my weight. I am more adventurous in trying new foods, but there are certain foods I refuse to eat like crustaceans, fried food, beer, bacon, pig meat, potato chips, and others unless I change my mind. The same goes to restrictive diet lifestyles like the Paleolithic diet, Atkins Diet, Veganism, Nutrisystem, Gluten-Free Diet, and the fraudulent diets that pop up like fads.

Doing this via "lone-wolf" style was the correct choice for me and I will never regret it. My body, my rules.

Veganism isn't a diet.

Just sayin'.

Yep, but the diet component of that lifestyle is discussed a lot in the media.

I know my rant had a very harsh tone, but I have no ill feelings towards Veganism and anything else I mentioned earlier. Whatever floats your bloat. What I hated was being told what to do without my input. My parents tried many therapists and strategies to solve my dietary problems for many years, but those plans failed in the end.

So if I typed with a chip on my shoulder, now you know why.

I didn't think it came off as harsh or a rant at all. :)

Went to Wal-Mart today to make some price comparisons, as well as an asian supermarket, which was pretty exciting.
They have avocados for cheaper than any place I've seen, and they had all sorts of vegetable dumplings in the frozen food section, as well as rice noodles.
Also went to a Dollar General store, and found they have the same corn tortillas as my mexican supermarket, for less money.
I'm excited. :)
I'm going to a potluck this Saturday, and the vegetable to be celebrated this time is the turnip, so I'm scouring AllRecipes for ideas.
These events motivate me to get off my butt and try something.
For the holidays, I will attempt some chocolate cupcakes with peppermint topping, as well as whipped cauliflower with garlic.

My weight has been an issue for a while. I'm carrying 30-40 extra pounds I think. Luckily I am tall so I don't look as obese as I should. I have had some luck with "My Fitness Pal" which is a website and an app that you keep track of your food and exercise on.

I need some help getting motivated again, any tips or ideas?

Hey, motivation is what this thread is for. Welcome. :)
I'm about 30 pounds overweight as well, but for me, I'm just focusing on the first 15 right now -- that takes long enough, at least at the slow rate I've decided to go. I'm taking it easy because I get very ill every time I push myself hard in the diet/exercise department. Does knowing that other people in this thread are also trying to lose weight help motivate you? I'm hoping more people like yourself post in this thread, so we'll have that much more comradery to keep us on track. If it helps you, feel free to post updates and pretend to yourself that you're "accountable" to us or something -- hey, whatever works. Like if you want to quit dieting, you can say, "Well, I want to be able to post positive progress in that thread," if that kind of thing can work for you. I'm trying to use it that way too.

i can only say what motivates me-

*being able to fit in my existing clothes, as i am too cheap to be bothered with buying new clothes
*fighting against my adverse family genes [diabetes, heart disease, fatty liver, arthritis et al], IOW the fear of succumbing to the same terminal diseases that killed my predecessors
*feeling better without carrying around all the extra weight
*having a better self-image from being slender as well as from being able to summon the self-discipline of weight control and physical fitness
*staying as physically/mentally youthful as i can manage, at my advanced age.

Hey thanks for the warm welcome, I feel like I'm on a team. Pretty cool. It's really cold here so I haven't done much in the exercise department as walking is pretty much my main activity. But I did eat properly today.......so far.
I'm still at work, it's almost 9pm and I've been here since 10am. When I get home it's very tempting to pig out, maybe I'll just relax with a glass or 2 of wine.

I know it sounds absolutely insane, and unhealthy. But I survived it.

All I did was drink two chocolate milks (500ML) a day and two pieces of toast - 1 with a fried egg and one with peanut butter - for breakfast with a banana. For an entire month. I lost 20 pounds and haven't put it back on since.

It's super unhealthy. But it's worked for me.

One chocolate milk 500 ML has 19G of protein

That actually sounds okay to me and probably not that unhealthy, maybe a vegetable now and then? Might have to try that.

I have been trying to lose weight for a long time now. I was quite skinny all through my childhood, till about 16/17, and then I got a job at subway. Oh, all those free sandwiches... that's when I noticed a bump appearing. And I realised how much I love junk food, so it carried on. And on. And on. I used to weigh 13st, and I'm 6ft. Now I weigh 16st. Still 6ft obviously. Damnnn... I've been on and off of diets, exercise, etc etc, and I'm just so damn noncommittal that I can't stick to it for more than a month. I even went to the gym, which also involved a 30 minute bike ride, but I'm currently suffering with a chest injury, which Doctors have no idea what it is, so I'm in the middle of loads of horrible tests where Doctors have to look at my naked torso and feel my chest up and down, so I pretty much can't do any exercise apart from walking, which I do plenty of anyway. It's just the diet really. It doesn't help either that my wife is a junk food addict, and even though she's thin, she's definatly not healthy, so I've been trying to get her to diet with me. If I was on my own, I'd probably be a lot more successful, as I would have my own routine, and a schedule to stick to. But because we do it together, we have to stick to the same schedule, and in that respect, she is the opposite of me. She hates sticking to schedules. And I hate eating differently to her. So if she orders a take away for dinner, I pretty much oblige all the time. DAMN IT! I have no will power! If I can just convince her to stick to my schedule, she'll see it's so much easier to stay eating healthy with a set plan! Oh well, I've started eating healthy again today, so I'll use this as a way to note down my results, cause I'm sure that would help aswell.

Ciao!
