For me, sports is an inextricable part of my life; without it, I'd be colorless and an insular person.

The money spent on sports is staggering. During the "economic crisis" the amount of money spent on something economically unnecessary has increased. I would have expected money spent on sports to take a hit during a crisis, but so far it has even stayed the same. The only interruptions to the money machine have been when absolute greed has shut down sports like the NBA. Although the media has talked about the "economic crisis" for years, I don't see any actual signs of it. If a true crisis existed, I would expect sports to be suffering severe cutbacks. Bowl games and March madness would be canceled or cut back severely. Pro sports would be spending less on salaries, and the general atmosphere would be one of trying to survive. Instead, sports spending is increasing.

More people unemployed, more people to watch games. It's also an escape from reality. During the Great Depression, movie ticket sales went up.

I also think that sports leagues for kids benefits them very much so. There should be less child beauty pageants and more sports leagues!

I'm not, really.
It's just another thing about human culture I find totally-bizarre.

That's how my ex tried to explain it to me: "It's something else for people to swear allegiance to".
Patriotism is likewise lost on me.

Heh. I like to pepper in sports references in my everyday talk; merely to liven things up.

I used to only like one sport; now that I like a lot of them, I am almost never bored throughout the year! :D

I like the hobby aspect of it. Collecting sportscards, and of course looking up a players statistics

I am obsessed with baseball statistics. I am a Red Sox fan, and I wear a Red Sox cap whenever I go outside.

i was never able to understand the point of sport.
using the example of "football":
when i was a child, i could not understand why people chased each other around to gain possession of a ball that i was not interested in. i never was interested in balls, so to see people who strenuously and violently tried to take possession of a ball from another person who just as strenuously tried to retain it, baffled me.

i thought that they could spare themselves the hassle and just go and buy a fresh new ball if they had enough money, and i wondered whether football players may have been very poor and that is why they fight so hard to "win a ball".

i have no capacity for "team" thinking, and i can not understand the social mechanisms that are characteristic of "group think".

i derive no inspiration from any external person's performance. that is unfortunate for me. i am not proud of it (i can not feel pride anyway so i guess my last sentence is moot). i do not feel that there is any "astral cable" that connects me to other people, and so their aspirations and achievements are entirely their own experiences if their only company is me.

q: who cares who can kick what where?
a: people who care who can kick what where it seems.
what an absolutely sterile avenue of interest it is in my opinion, to be dependent on external substitution.

i know now as an adult, that "sport" is all about "competition" , but why should i care about a competition in which i am not a subjective competitor?

even if i was invited to compete, i would decline because i am not interested in how i compare to them. i am interested only about my internally focused concerns, and i rarely scan the outer world with enough curiosity to see who is "out there" (or, by extension, how i "compare").
