That's pretty sad and a serious turnoff from going to these cheaper fitness places.

Yea, out of the fitness places I've dealt with, 3 have played games, 2 of them were mom and pop places, one was LA fitness. It's worth it to get some of your own equipment if you have the space. Cardio equipment if the only thing I really need a gym for, I can run without it, but it's bad for my joints depending on how muchI run.

This is not a true statement. I have been going to PF for the past year and there are definitely some fit people there. It is a very good beginner gym. You can lift heavy enough for your first year, they have dumbbells that go up to 75 pounds. That being said, I am reaching my limits of Planet Fitness and will be looking to move on to a new gym soon.

Positives of PF:
24 hours a day on weekdays
Clean facilities, good locker rooms/ showers
Lots of locations (with black card membership you can go wherever, good for people who travel or work)
Working equipment
Lots of quality cardio pieces
Price

Negatives:
No real free weight bars
No bench press areas (can sit on a bench and use up to the 60 pound barbells they have I guess)
No squat rack
No calf raise/seated calf machine
Limit of 75 pound dumbells

Thanks a lot for the info. I am unable to attend university until August or later, so I may end up having to go this route after all. I didn't even see this post until now--sorry about that. -.-

I could decline press more than 75 pounds in about half a year, and I believe that beginners should do bench presses, barbell rows, chin-ups and squats at least. Cardio training you can do just as well outside.
