If you go from zero to ten miles regularly, yeah, you'll wreck your knees and hips. Most people usually have a training plan that works them up to that distance (or beyond) and it can be done injury free. Running injuries can be avoided if you train well and listen to your body.
Also, back to the original topic, I'm a runner. I normally do 20-30 miles a week; more if my race schedule calls for it. Usually a couple of shorter, hard efforts during the week and then a two or three hour effort on the weekends. I normally run trails (not the paved kind) and I think it's the best therapy I've ever had.
